A poem from 13 years ago, remembering half a century before, which with the current Bootleg box set is still here.

I'm being entirely serious when I say that this is one of the core commitments of reactionary politics: demand all the privileges, refuse any of the responsibility.

Happy Bootleg Series release day! Here's my exhaustive (exhausting?) track by track guide to read while you listen. A deep dive on each song—where they come from, what they sound like, have we heard them before

You’re a great interviewer Ray but I’m sorry you don’t care for Delilah. It’s a shape shifter song, moving between real and parody, affection and authenticity, and Tom Jones is a force of nature gifted singer. It’s going to be eternal.

Great read from @iandunt.bsky.social on whether Starmer should stay or go, including the mystery of how, if you’re launching a popular climate, energy, and growth strategy, why wouldn’t you stage a press conference on it?

Could Katie Lam identify the London schools where "more than three-quarters of children don’t speak English to a serviceable school standard". Well done to @davehillonlondon.bsky.social for giving Lam + CPS the chance to substantiate this claim at the Tory fringe

Recent comments about the capital's school children's English skills suggest the Tory MP from Kent must try harder

No doubt your charge is still wandering the kitchen, but Trev has retired to winter quarters: a box in a hutch in a shed. With no memory of summer treats I’m sure.

Migration makes for political deflection and migrants an easy scapegoat, but most "concerns" around immigration are flat out false and driven by hostile rhetoric.
Reality is, on a day to day basis, people are more worried about how they'll get through to the next payday.

'Manufactured panic': Immigration not near top of most people's concerns, poll suggests
The cost of living, health, crime, and housing are much higher on people's lists of personal worries, a YouGov survey has suggested.

Been a while since we put a pumpkin out to signal to people that we were dishing out sweeties, but when we did it looked like this.

Wonderful aside in this excellent thread. Pure Wodehouse.
Most people are better served in ready-to-wear, not cheap custom. If they do custom tailoring, they would benefit from having someone gently guide them towards better choices, politely saying "no" when necessary. See what Graydon Carter said of his tailor at Anderson & Sheppard.

More information coming out now on this. Looks like a Cabinet Office scheme led by Georgia Gould… planned savings of £10m-£30m a year (back up lower Premier League full-back price) don’t really seem worth the candle if this the result IMO.

Kemi Badenoch is absolutely right about this.

At the time she hacked Harriet Harman's emails it was an offence carrying a prison sentence of up to five years
