i believe the dhs regulations on detention for minors are supposed to be the "least restrictive" i am genuinely confused how police had a 13yo in custody and allowed transfer to ICE at all since it's literally against the law in Massachusetts?

ICE kidnapped a 7th-grader with a pending asylum claim and spirited him out of state without notifying his parents, seemingly with the cooperation of the local police in Everett, MA.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by ICE in Everett and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

"She said to me after that - Samantha, 21 years old - all my life I've prepared for this moment. All my life, my mom, 53 years old, who was just going to get meat for a stew, has told me one day this could come."

A USC (it's wrong to do even if he wasn't an USC but what is their jurisdiction to do this!?)

George was just trying to get to work.

ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.

This man is a veteran and American citizen. Don't look away.

once these cases go to court, suddenly all the evidence contradicts everything DHS says, weird! almost like they are lying without a care.

“we generally don’t determine alienage while in the building,” adding, “no rights have been violated today.” if you don't know if they are US citizens or not then you don't have jurisdiction to detain them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

As I told @josephcox.bsky.social for this piece, if DHS is concerned that the actions of their own officers might inflame public opinion against the agency, they should work to increase oversight and accountability at the agency — rather than seek to have the evidence banned.

New: Apple banned an app that simply archived videos of ICE abuses. Rather than other apps that record ICE official's real-time location, Eyes Up is to "preserve evidence until it can be used in court." Videos from TikTok etc. Every submission manually reviewed

i know people make mistakes, and it was over ten years ago but they literally fired a woman with almost fifteen years experience who ran our immigration courts and replaced her with .... "guy who accidentally shot gun into the floor" interesting new way of merit based hiring, i guess.

This SCOTUS is so heavily focused on 'culture war' issues instead of like the war on the constitution currently happening.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Tuesday in a case that aims to undo several states’ bans on “conversion therapy” for youth, a dangerous pseudoscientific practice that purports to “convert” gay people to heterosexuality or make transgender people become cisgender.

genuinely confused by the democratic strategy in Maine to run an establishment candidate Mills against Collins (which Collins will definitely win) instead of running the union oyster guy at a time when labor votes are deciding elections and people are angry at establishment candidates on both sides

RAJU: You swore in 2 GOP members during pro forma session. Why not swear in Grijalva? Does it have to do w/her signature on Epstein petition?

JOHNSON: It has nothing to do with that. We'll swear her in when everybody is back

R: Why not now?

J: Uh - we'll schedule it, I guess, as soon as she wants

It’s of note that during tonight’s hearing the DoJ didn’t even try to make the case that changing conditions on the ground in Portland warranted the CA National Guard. Instead they relied on legal technicalities. Proving again that what they say in court is different than lies they tell the public.
