Luca’s yelp when they narrowly avoided getting tackled was cut off as they both disappeared through the portal that would lead them back to Kamar-Taj.

with Stephen tight on their heels.

“You get back here, Luca Dravenchild!” Strange bellowed while chasing his student across the gravely ground toward where they had first portalled in. “You’ll be answering for your crimes until the end of your lineage, you rascal!”
strangestephen.bsky.social
Their expression told Stephen that an 𝘰𝘩-𝘴𝘰-𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 follow-up was coming, but he crossed his arms over his chest and waited for it nonetheless. “Or, you know, 𝘯𝘰𝘵. Does that mean you’ll die a 𝘍𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘺 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘖𝘭𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯?”

They darted away in a sprint as soon as they had finished their sentence,

Stephen noticed it and arched an eyebrow at them, knowing full well what that smug expression meant. “So, in summary,” they started, shifting their weight around on their feet, “you’re kinda 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 in the dating scene,” they mused.

which also wouldn’t be fair to a potential special someone”. He dusted his hands off and bent to pick the notebook up from the ground to tuck it into a crevice in his suit. He ignored the sideways glance Wong was giving him.

Luca stood up and rubbed the light scruff on their chin with one hand.
strangestephen.bsky.social
He could feel Wong’s eyes boring into his backside and turned to face him. “And thirdly — which 𝘺𝘰𝘶 have personally enlightened me about in the past, Wong — my probability of death is about eleven times higher than that of an average working man,
strangestephen.bsky.social
“And anyway, it wouldn’t work out. I’m married to my work and I’m off-world more than I’m on-world. It wouldn’t feel right to leave them hanging like that”.

He got up from the ground, sighing quietly to himself as he dusted off the gravel that had stuck to his robes.
strangestephen.bsky.social
“Maybe I’m just not interested in dating,” he said, closing the notebook he had been holding. Of course, there were also a myriad of other reasons why he didn’t date. Or might they have been excuses? Some of them, maybe, but the important ones were valid enough.

“I’m never bringing either of you with me on these kinds of trips ever again,” Stephen warned, but he could impossibly fight the grin. When even the stoic Wong had to suppress a smile, it was a good day.

He scoffed and rolled his eyes before turning back around.

of cracking the best jokes when sitting in a classroom.

“Limitation of nesting spaces also match”.

Gawking, Stephen turned his head to glare at Wong. Luca could no longer hold their laughter, doubling over where they sat, and Wong visibly pressed his lips together. Absolute criminals!
strangestephen.bsky.social
was their unfortunate match in humor. While Strange did everything in his power to restrain himself, Luca had made him inches from losing his composure on multiple occasions. It was perhaps the most challenging while in the teaching sphere. The rascal had a mean habit
strangestephen.bsky.social
“Remember that I’m the one who will give you the pass or fail after your trials”.

Luca pressed their lips together, but Stephen could see the barely contained laughter in their eyes. One reason why they functioned well together, both in the classroom and out on excursions like this,
strangestephen.bsky.social
“Their diet too,” Luca commented with one eyebrow arched, continuing the joke.

Stephen slapped their arm with the back of his fingers. “You be nice!” he said, then held up his index finger to poke it into their personal space.
strangestephen.bsky.social
that made his heart ache in the most delightful way. He should’ve brought a pack of tissues.

“Their social patterns are about the same as yours,” Wong spoke up from where he stood, breaking the relative silence. Stephen could 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 the infinitesimal grin in his tone.
strangestephen.bsky.social
accompanied the hums. Noises that Stephen had never heard them utter at any point when he had encountered them before. It was a song, like the calls of a blue whale during their meetings. A song toward each other. 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺, 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮 𝘺𝘰𝘶. It was beautiful. A sight

it was words that he treasured, no matter their origin. “To know your days are numbered”.

The enormous, snail-looking creatures hummed in a low tone, the parts of their bodies that Strange had assumed were their faces nuzzling gently against one another. Shrill chirps and repeated clicks
strangestephen.bsky.social
“Death is what gives life meaning,” Stephen said solemnly. It felt odd and almost somber to repeat the words of someone he himself had learned from so many years ago. They were long gone, and they had said it to him only moments before their passing. Still,
strangestephen.bsky.social
he could assume that immortality would eventually grow dull. Despite the expansion of the world with the aid of magic, there were still only so many things left within it. And, unfortunately, that number was declining with every year that passed.
strangestephen.bsky.social
“You should have wished for immortality for Christmas, Stephen,” Luca joked and nudged him with their elbow, which made him laugh with a sort of delight. As much as it would extend the limits of what he would be able to witness during one life,
strangestephen.bsky.social
“I expect neither of us will be here to witness the birth of these two’s brood. My research isn’t yet complete, but I’ve estimated their gestations based on their size, social patterns, limitation of nesting spaces, and presumed diet to somewhere between one and a half to two centuries”.
