If they’d expanded on some of the ideas and made them made sense within the universe, I think it would be easier to swallow. But the movie pretty much demands fan theories to cover the gaps.

Was this good enough to crack my already horror-heavy top ten for the movies of 2023?

Rewatched it for the first time in decades a couple months back. It is a movie that makes some choices, that's for sure.

‘TRON: ARES’ has earned $14.3M in its opening day at the domestic box office.

For comparison, ‘MORBIUS’ opened to $17.3M.

"Samara Weaving going John Wick on silent, post-apocalyptic cultists in the forest" is either going to hook you or repel you. It hooked me, once I learned to appreciate it for what it is. #Letterboxd #FilmSky #MovieSky
A ★★★★½ review of Azrael (2024)
Modern silent movies are a tricky sell. Since spoken dialogue has been the standard in movies for almost a century now, silent movies now feel like a gimmick. A movie that chooses not to have dialogue...

I wouldn’t be mad at it, but he wouldn’t be my first choice. I was thinking John Lithgow.

Oh, sure, make me add something to the wishlist. THANKS. 😁

At least, if they're going to do social commentary, pick ONE thing. Trying to be about brand worship, corporate "family" culture, third-world exploitation, AND body image is a little crowded for a movie about killer jeans.

It is a Lovecraftian, technicolor madhouse of a movie. Not as loud and aggressive as Mandy is, but crazy all the same.

The perfect band to have one of its members say "can the poems, it's ass-whipping time!". No other band could make that joke work quite as well.

I found it overly ambitious for such a silly concept. Tried to have commentary on too many issues for any one idea to feel fully formed, while also trying to be straight-up scary, while also trying to be silly and OTT. Too many ingredients working against each other.

I vastly prefer Color Of Out Shape to Mandy for weird, stylish, crazy movies with Nic Cage. But I seem to be in the minority on that.

Just saw the news about John Lodge, and my iTunes brought up "Nights In White Satin" not ten minutes later. That'll do, universe. That'll do. RIP

It's #LetterboxdFriday so here's my #LastFourWatched

An average wilderness survival horror movie,
Vincent Price goes all in on sinister,
An irresponsible puff-piece of a documentary,
And a disappointing haunted house movie that never pays off its vibes.
Posters from my Letterboxd account of the last four movies I've seen, with the most recent on the left.

Don't Move, from 2024, three stars.
The Abominable Dr. Phibes, from 1971, four stars
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, from 2025, half a star
The Innocents, from 1961, three stars

I'm on the opposite end of this. I thought it was excellent. Great acting, love how the movie works to convince the viewer that the apocalyptic prophecy may actually be real, and the weight of the burden these "missionaries" carry ... to each their own.

Pro tip: alternate with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker.
