That brilliant smile and matching sparkle in René’s eyes sing a lie that digs into Hector’s bones and asks to gouge out the marrow, to dip into his blood and fester, consuming him from the inside. Every time René wants something from him, Hector has to wonder if everyone’s wrong about vampires not being able to truly compel each other, or about turned vampires—even ones much, much older than him—not having the ability at all. He’d question the whole idea of compulsion and thralls if he hadn’t done it to people himself. Then again, compulsion’s easy to break if you see it, and the way René sinks into Hector’s will like a waiting bath is anything but.

Love, Hector’s learned, will do that to a person.
