I know it's a foundational point of the genre, but I'm definitely ok with more games that don't have contact damage and require the enemy to actually swing on you.

True. I think that's the difference between him and Punisher. He still has faith in the legal system, he's catching them and delivering them because they can't do that.

Meanwhile Castle's perception is the legal system would fail to properly punish them as much as they failed to catch them.

I get that you wanna put a modern lens on it but I don't agree. Batman supports the common people over billionaires, he'll take a bullet for a girl who is related to no one in particular.

And reductively referring to the rogue's gallery as just mentally ill ignores all of, you know, the murders.

To be fair, I've always taken the Batman logic is acknowledging that if he does it once it'll be too easy to justify it the next time.

I kind of like it as a conceit that he's aware of his own weakness. [And there's plenty of Batman what-if stories where he goes monsterous and does just that.]
