On youth unemployment, the likelihood of becoming unemployed remains historically quite low. The problem lies in unemployed youth trying to find new jobs.

General story we are all hearing: employers, uncertain of what's coming, are holding off hiring and expanding

🇨🇦 Youth unemployment duration appears to remain elevated as well - portion of unemployed that have been searching for 6 months or more

Youth unemployment rate remains high (judgement here depends on your reference point). These are not seasonally adjusted, age 15-24, September each year

🇨🇦 I know everyone is thinking about pie, but the jobs numbers came out today. Employment up, unemployment rate steady overall. I updated a few figures.

Employment rates of moms and dads age 25-54, by age of youngest child

For a certain audience of Canadian policy experts, I imagine there are no more exciting words than "automatic federal benefits" for low-income Canadians.

Though I also imagine the details matter a lot.

As a labour economist I might be expected to be interested in the labour market outcomes. On the other hand as a public economist I think the ethics results are worth more attention; part of the case for publicly-sponsored religion is better social cohesion rather than private benefits.

I know this is literally not true, but it feels like 50% of Ontario provincial politics is about alcohol.

I had to do exactly that on our campus (Uni & Hazel) a couple weeks ago, with a regional police officer standing by - she just laughed, this was ridiculous.

I keep framing this year as my 50th year on this planet, which absolutely 🤯. I've done a lot of cool things in the past 5 decades, and I know you have too. Enjoy this last day in your 40s!
I'm trying to decide what to do with my last day in my 40s, coming soon. Ideas?

We often talk about how updating our IT infrastructure for programs like Employment Insurance matter. But pause to think if how we administered thus in 1951.

There are more people than I realized who think speed limits are really just guidelines, not real laws, that provide an opportunity for officers to stop and fine you if they don't like you that day. (I don't think this is a good thing.)

We have cameras in school zones. Slow down.
