I followed the butterfly with my eyes until it hovered over a flower. Then a building caught my eye. Two storeys crowned by a flat terrace. Its door darkened by age and sun. It had the presence of a small palace, proud and aloof amidst its humbler neighbours.

The origami bird on my desk unfolds one crease nightly. "Stop that," I tell it, but paper has its own timeline.

Tonight it's almost flat—just one fold remains. A wing trembling like it might take flight.

I've been sleeping here, watching. If it completely unfolds, something ends. Or begins. The bird doesn't say which.

*One more night,* I think, touching its paper heart. The wing holds its shape a little longer.
