Sorry for the lengthy reply chain. I'm sure most folks will usually sway more towards one side or the other, these are just my personal thoughts on it. Hope it made some sense.

I don't believe it ALWAYS has to be that way though.
To explain my point, Especially with things like cartoons and animation, where oftentimes characters aren't based on real life, I feel like authenticity needn't be as strenuous, provided EVERYONE gets an equal and fair shot at the dartboard.

When it comes to characters specifically designed a certain way, to be a certain way, absolutely I'd prefer they have an authentic sound. Whether that be via an accent, speech pattern, or ability to connect with the character's story.

Definitely a very tender and hotspot for a lot of people.
My personal take is that authenticity is extremely important, though maybe not in the way a lot of people assume.
