Not always. My debut I just knew there would be an old wood-bed pickup truck. My second manuscript, I wanted dresses with bustles and vaudeville, so the time period was a little more narrowed down.

If I'm writing historical, I try to read a couple of nf books and watch shows set during the period. For others, sometimes just reading a comp title or drawing from experience.
