Today felt like I spent more time crossing out than writing, but there is another paragraph on the page (and a lot of reading about the Latin American Wars of Independence to do), so I'm taking that as a win. #amwriting #menandwar

It's Miss Meteyard, not Miss Rossiter. The exact quotation is 'Horn rims. Cross between Ralph Lynn and Bertie Wooster.' I can't find the response to the caricature at the moment. I'll have to go back to my notes.

Miss Rossiter (I think) refers to Peter as Berti Wooster in specs in Murder Must Advertise. There is also a a letter from Sayers about a caricature that references him, but I’ll need to get out my dissertation for the actual quotation.

Based on this, a considerable portion of my cultural history research corpus may have, in fact, been selected based on sausage content. (No euphemism intended, says the historian of masculinity…)

Or you could have a writing process that looks more like this…?

Not shown: three bottles rose hip syrup, a litre of blackberry gin and one of slow gin infusing for Christmas, several jars of gooseberry jam and marmalade made earlier in the year and about 3 kg of frozen blackberries.

It has been what is known as a mast year, a reference to beech masts and the abundance of fruits and nuts. This is the result from my garden and the local hedgerows. Everything here is home grown or foraged, including apples, plums, blackberries, sloes, bullaces, elderberries and rose hips.

And hear scholars like them speak. To be able to ask them questions. And then, over the course of the next few days, have them also listen to your own work and ask you questions about it. The support of leading scholars for the past (nearly) 25 years is a huge part of the Society's success. 5/

Reposting purely to continue mortifying @chriskempshall.bsky.social for as long as possible! 😂

Huge thanks and congratulations to outgoing @fwwsoc.bsky.social President @chriskempshall.bsky.social, who has done a great job in making the society a real community, with programming that speaks to the 21stC academy and its precarity. He hates being praised and I will keep embarrassing him by it.

There were topics covered from Hawaii to Japan and many countries in-between (going the long way round), including strategy, diplomacy, social history and literary and cultural work. A reminder: @fwwsjournal.bsky.social is very keen to have more literary/cultural papers (email me if interested).

Closing out this year’s @fwwsoc.bsky.social’s conference in Thessaloniki with a guided tour of the Allied Military Cemetery at Zeitenlik. An appropriate end to an intense, enjoyable and educational few days.

Yes! I’m really excited - I’ve never tackled anything quite like this before!

A history of masculinity and warfare, c.1775-2000. I also have a fiction project on the go, but it is going to have to take a back seat for the next three months.

Getting the 50,000 words of the next book that I’ve committed to for my research leave in the page. They will be messy, but it will get done!

Possibly a few too many heavy emotions for this to be fun, but there are lots of great photographs. And the question of why my grandfather and his cousin both changed their surname to the same new name in the same year but none of the rest of their cousins did is going to niggle at me.

With two book projects on the go and two more in the planning stages (plus various other professional and domestic projects on the go), what I *really* don’t need is to suddenly develop an interest in the family tree and all the family history materials my mother collected and which I inherited! 📜

An advertising banner for Matt Houlbrook's book Songs of Seven Dials: An Intimate History of 1920s and 1930s London. The banner includes an image of the front cover of the book (a blue map on a pink background) and a blurb from the historian Julia Laite, which describes Songs of Seven Dials as 'a poetic exploration of London's most iconic neighbourhoods'.

Some big news: the University of Birmingham is launching a new MA in Gender & Sexuality. It's interdisciplinary, with a focus on combining theory & practice. It's going to be amazing. I'm convening it: message or email with questions. www.birmingham.ac.uk/study/postgr... @unibirmingham.bsky.social
