I've been wanting to start this one for a long time now, and it's been so freeing to write some of the arcs as novels, so here's the first chapter of an alternate universe, where Anne wasn't born at the same time as Titus.

Their bsky account: @nasobem.bsky.social
Their Etsy shop (where all the AI is there): www.etsy.com/shop/nasobem...

These two are adorable. 💜

"You don't know what he's capable of, Anne. The fact he's here... he hasn't told you what happened to his Anne, has he? Just that she's gone."
"He's not ready to talk about it."
"Of course he's not. Just ask him to be honest."
"Nothing he's told me so far was a lie, Julian. I know how to read him."
Julian with one arm out, looking at Anne. In the background is Celeste, still not taking her eyes off Dante, and Cornelius by the ladder, his hands in front of him.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"Anne doesn't want that for you."
"Then she shouldn't have had Celeste transition the bond. I think we both know this was always going to happen. At least this way you get us all out of the way in one."
"Dante..."
"Stop pretending. You don't care about me, or anyone else. She's all that matters."
Titus with his hands in front of him, one hitting the other.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"This is your last chance. Leave with Celeste now, and you'll be safe."
"Not happening."
"You do know she was right, don't you? If you die down here the birthplace of magic will take your soul, and it will become part of it, making it impossible for you to ever live again."
"Fine."
Dante looking at Titus, his arms crossed.
thelockwoods.me.uk
Celeste looked back at Dante. Maybe if she told him she had feelings for him it might be enough to get him to leave. Only it was obvious he cared far more about Anne than he did about anyone else. He was meant to be her soulmate, so it made sense. They were meant to be... until Titus.
Celeste looking back at Dante and Titus, Dante with his arms crossed and Titus with his hand out explaining something, as Cornelius stands near the ladder with his hands in front of him. Anne and Julian are still talking to the side of Dante and Titus.

"Choosing Titus was the right thing to do, then. I will accept immortality if it means we'll be together."
"Anne, please..."
"No, Julian, my decision is made. You aren't going to change it. I love him."
"That's the bond."
"When it started there barely was a bond. He's the man I want to be with."
Anne looking at Julian, one arm around her waist and the other beside her face, as he has his hand out.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"You can be. I know you don't feel like it now, but that will fade." Titus's voice was the last thing Dante wanted to hear, especially when it came to his soul, and the fact the soulbond was no longer part of him. "Leave with Celeste."
"This isn't on you, Celeste. Go now. Be safe."
Dante looking at Celeste.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"I can't. Please leave with me now. Live your life, Dante."
"My decision is made."
"Anne doesn't want you to die."
"Then she shouldn't have had the bond transitioned, because she's already taken part of my soul, Celeste. What she did... I'm never going to be whole again, and that... I can't."
Celeste, looking at Dante, one hand out.
thelockwoods.me.uk
Anne would understand, and she wouldn't want him to walk away before he managed to convince Celeste to leave. Titus turned the same way she did, to look at Dante, certain she was going to try one last time to get him to leave, even though it wasn't going to happen.
"Just go, Celeste."
Titus listening to what Julian's telling Anne, wishing he could talk to her, but he has to focus on getting Celeste out.
thelockwoods.me.uk
All truth, and she wasn't certain she wanted to know any of it, but it wasn't as though Anne had a choice any longer. She'd made a decision that changed everything. Titus was her soulmate, because it was what she wanted.
"Immortality?"
"To keep you for ever being lost, Anne, for Glimmerbrook."
Anne looking to the side.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"The Heart?"
"It's what Thaddeus called you. Without you there is no magic."
'Julian, stop.'
Anne closed her eyes. "Titus never told me any of this."
"He couldn't. A promise was made, and it limited how much of this he could share, which was foolish but understandable. Now you need to know."
Julian with his arms crossed.
thelockwoods.me.uk
Celeste leaving was for the best, and of course she'd try to save Cornelius, because Anne would want her to. Even Anne's friends would do anything for her, which likely had something to do with her being the only soul to have left the birthplace of magic. If that was even true. Dante couldn't know.

thelockwoods.me.uk
"For Anne."
"She'd never forgive me if I didn't get you out now, Celeste. There is no other way with things as they are. Dante could have left, lived a life without Anne, but he's as unwilling to do that as both Julian and Titus."
"Cornelius?"
"He loves her. I doubt he'd leave, but you can try."
Celeste looking thoughtfully at Titus, her hand touching her bottom lip, as he has his hand out.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"I think you know as well as I do the time has come to accept Dante isn't going to make the logical choice." Titus didn't look at Dante, but at Celeste, the one who'd be Anne's friend in the future. "You tried your best. Now, though, you should leave, because I don't want to hurt you."
Titus looking at Celeste.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"Being the Heart is complicated, Anne." Julian's voice was as gentle as he could make it, trying to control the emotions, even though it wasn't easy. "I can't imagine what you're feeling right now, but I love you. That's why I stayed, and I need you to listen to me, because he's not who he seems."
Julian with a hand in front of him, looking at Anne.
thelockwoods.me.uk
Alone, Anne stared at nothing, as Julian looked at her, in control of the body he shared with her brother. He didn't believe she'd made the right choice, because he wanted to be the one she chose. They all did, apart from Celeste, due to what she was, in the same way so many others had.
Anne looking to the side, hands in front of her, as Julian talks, one hand in front of him.
thelockwoods.me.uk
As Titus stepped away from Anne, his focus turning to Celeste, it was Cornelius's chance. He could leave the birthplace of magic. Only then he wouldn't be able to help stop Titus, and that was a necessity. It wasn't just about Anne, but Glimmerbrook too. Titus couldn't be in control.
Cornelius looking down.
thelockwoods.me.uk
There were no doubts. Anne trusted him. If Titus said there was no other option then she'd accept it, even though she'd never wanted to be immortal, their conversation during their first life nothing more than a moment of pain getting the better of her. Eventually she'd made different choices.
Titus kissing Anne's cheek.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"I need to talk to Celeste." Anne put her hands over Titus's as he kissed her cheek. "Before I do anything more I need to get her out of here. That means leaving you with Julian."
"Don't worry. He's not going to change my mind, even if... is it the only way?"
"Unfortunately, yes, but I'll be there."
Titus kissing Anne's cheek, arms wrapped around her.
thelockwoods.me.uk
'You aren't helping.' Julian pushed Titus back, reclaiming control of the body. "Anne, I'm sorry." In that time the other Titus had wrapped his arms around Anne, pulling her close to him again, lips pressed against her cheek. "Your brother's worried about you, and so am I. Is this the right choice?"
Julian looking at Anne and Titus, Titus with his arm back around Anne, and Cornelius in the background, still with his hand on his head.
thelockwoods.me.uk
Leaving wasn't an option. Julian made that obvious. Only hearing Celeste talk about souls... Cornelius had a chance to live again if he left, unless Titus went so far as to shred his soul, something Julian warned him was possible. That was why the Fosters were lost - Titus shredded Elias's soul.
Cornelius, worried, a hand on his head.
thelockwoods.me.uk
"So be it."

Those words told Celeste everything. Dante's decision couldn't be changed. Even knowing his soul might fade didn't bother him, but then maybe that made sense - Anne had made her choice, and his soulmate was gone, the person who was meant to love him no matter what. It hurt deeply.
