Body in the twin cities, mind in the 16th-early 20th century. Thomas Paine was robbed…and so were we.

I started writing the quote as I remembered from the book and realized I was gonna butcher the hell out of it.

Upon looking it up, yeah…it would have been a shadow of his original words.

One does not paraphrase the King!
“If you wrote something for which someone sent you a check, if you cashed the check and it didn't bounce, and if you then paid the light bill with the money, I consider you talented.”

-Stephen King, “On Writing”
100000000%!

And especially when it is during lunch, like a “brown bag virtual training” or “lunch and learn”.

Let me eat my goddamn microwaved paneer in peace - it’s all I have left.
He’s the reverse Roy Batty.

“I haven’t seen things you people believe.”
Completely agree that it’s not something you can overlook. Bland conversation and lack of intellectual curiosity are bad enough, but they are mere symptoms of a much bigger problem.
Look at that mimesis. Clearly you’ve read Adorno to them.
Ah, it was excerpt from WH Auden, from the poem Sept 1 1939:

“I and the public know
What all schoolchildren learn,
Those to whom evil is done
Do evil in return.”

We can do better, I hope.
I think that is all we can do. Turn pain into connection and understanding.

It is no small thing and it is to be commended and praised. Many just inflict pain to hide their pain.

Oh…there’s a quote about this…is it yates?
Like Fezzik’s mom* said…”Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.”

*makes much more sense when she says it to Fezzik in the book….Wesley saying it to Buttercup in the movie is less compelling. (IMHO)
One thing is for sure, I’d probably be someone who doesn’t understand trauma. The consequence of that would be that i’d be unable to understand the people that carry it.

My streetlight cone would illuminate a smaller area…and I might not be able to see the light cones of others.
After reading Adorno’s Minima Moralia: Reflections on Damaged Life….i’ve abandoned those thoughts - it’s far too easy to get bitter. If I talked like him, I’d be friendless.

Better to reflect on the good and the bad….see how they shaped you and then propagate the good to yourself and to others.
Thanks so much for all of the work you do, James - I really enjoy (and learn from) the translations (and other content) that you post.
Oh, I know! I’m sorry - as you can tell, I realized (too late) that I was riffing on a song without having indicated that we were on the same sheet of music. 😊
I will also stop using the preposition “of”, apparently.

(Totally agree that “nod” is very overused)
All my characters will now either “slowly drift to sleep” or “offer a tilt their head , indicating taciturn agreement”

But they shall not nod!

Neither will they lie. Only exaggerate or lean.
I richly deserve this. Going to touch grass.
*fist bump*

Thank you, sir. I feel seen!
You’re right. I need to relax a bit. Not a good idea to read philosophy and post while dour! 😂
Yet another label for something that needs no label…..labeling things has become how we “understand” everything.

Trouble is, we no longer actually look inside to see the ingredients/components.

It is identification without understanding. And it sucks.
Framers: “Inalienable rights cannot be taken away or transferred!!”

Capitalism (Jeremy Irons voice): “Who’s taking or transferring? We’re just buying at a fair market price!” *grins*
I mean, come on, there are ONLY 738,827,917 games (many of which are good) that have sword wielding waifus with big bewbies

They should have a mod that does this, but state that it is actually Jin, who has had FFS and top surgery. Just trap these assholes in an iron mask of rage. Fuck them!
Man, did they learn nothing from Michael Richards?
Came across this description of observational bias in Wizenbaum’s “computer power and human reason”….and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Once something lands outside their streetlight, they just crumble mentally.

Like the orphaned articles I spilled all over what I just wrote. 😂
Somewhere (everywhere?), however, the all this frictionless speed is creating a massive and numerous metaphorical xenon pits across many cores…
