⛳️ I got to introduce golf to my P-2 #PhysEd students this year thanks to the support of Golf Canada's First Tee program.

🤕 Most of the early lessons focused on not whacking your classmate with a golf club. We came up with the "4S of Safety":

🗣️ Signal
👍 Sidekick
🏌️‍♀️ Swing
✅ As somebody who obsesses over curriculum, I always dreamed of designing my own set of #PhysEd outcomes.

✨ Last year, that dream became a reality.

A Curriculum of Their Own: How I Designed Bespoke PE Outcomes for My School
I designed a bespoke set of P-5 outcomes for my school. Here's how.

🙅🏻‍♂️ Teaching outside used to be something I avoided at all costs.

🤷🏻‍♂️ These days, outdoor education has become a major component of my #PhysEd program.

For the little kids, I’d definitely start with orienteering with landmarks and maps before getting into compass work. We then worked on general sense of direction (e.g. sun rises in east, sets in west; moss grows on north side of trees). Found these to be pre-reqs for compass work.
🗺️ In my Spring Forest School unit, students learned how to use landmarks to navigate the woods.
👀 For practice, we played "Stuffy Safari". I hid 8 stuffies near landmarks. Kids got hints and used binoculars to find them!
🧸 Can you spot the bear in this photo?

Definitely planning. A lot of work goes into making sure activities are safe, visual, and effective (especially when introducing new activities in the woods). I find that blogging about my experiences serves as a reflection tool AND a keepsake to help make planning for efficient next year.
🧭 This year, I got *closer* to teaching my Primary (K) students how to use a compass in #PhysEd.

🧑‍🎨 It took some spray paint and new visuals, but we’re getting there!

🔵 Blue on your belly.
🧭 Dial it in.
⬆️ Put Red Fred in the Shed.
✅ Green means go!

💪 Closer every attempt!
🥳 The 2024-2025 school year was one to remember.

👇 Some of my personal #PhysEd highlights include:

🌳 Forest School adventures.
🚵‍♀️ Teaching kids to mountain bike.
🏴‍☠️ Introducing Treasure Time.
🗺️ Building the KCA Roadway.

🙏 I'm grateful to get to do what I do, and I can't wait to be back next year!
It was so much easier than you would think! The students (even my primaries aka kindergarten kids) were very engaged, and the fire you see in the group shot was the biggest we made. Happy to share more if you want!
🔥 Yesterday's #physed lesson was FIRE!

🧯 Like, actually.

🎯 Students got to learn how fire is a force of nature that must be respected, its role in helping Indigenous peoples thrive in cold climates, and the fundamentals of building a fire.

❄️ It's all part of our Winter Forest School unit!
I haven’t taken the kids out skiing yet, but we just wrapped up our skating outings.

I labelled the back of all my skates with their size, lined them up by size. This made it easy for volunteers to grab a pair that fit.

Next year, I’m using spray paint instead of labels (one colour/size)
😍 Don’t mean to boast, but I think I might have the prettiest classroom in the world today. #physed
It was SUCH a blast! I’ll be writing up a reflection post this weekend to share more. I’d do it now, but I’m exhausted and my whole body hurts lol
❄️ Today, I'm hosting Winter Wild Day at my school: a full-day, outdoor-education based field day for upper elementary students.

🛷 As part of this, I've transformed the sled hill at our school and made posters to help students learn a) ski trail difficulty ratings and b) how to assess risk. #physed
❄️ As annoying as shovelling snow every morning may be, winter weather creates opportunities for physical activity that just simply aren't possible year-round.

🎿 I'm grateful to be able to make the most of all this snow with my students in #physed! Our Winter Forest School lessons have been a blast!
It’s great to be here, Jenny! I’m obviously in great company!
