I remain distraught that Brenthaven stopped making their awesome laptop backpacks. I've not met a better one since.

That said, I currently use a Thule Crossover 2 20L that seems to tick most of your boxes. Probably worth a look.

I've been struggling through the process to FOIA my own data from CBP. They keep asking for identity verification, but don't respond to queries about the ID submission process (which is where I'm stuck). Has anyone been through this and can help?

Yep, reproduces for me, too. It's also happens if you right-click on the thumbnail and open the image in another tab, ie the issue travels with the image. I'm guessing something along the way mangled the jpeg a bit.

Some unused cover ideas for this week's issue

Unpredictability is a hard thing to illustrate. One cheeky idea was to draw a cartoon of Mr Trump as a goldfish, playing on the popular myth that goldfish have a short attention span. Our designers relished the opportunity to create a striking, original image, and executed it brilliantly. The hair makes it obvious who this is, and the gold hints at Mr Trump’s well-known love of that colour. But the metaphor is not right. Granted, the president has a short attention span and this can have geopolitical consequences when he tires of one issue and moves on to the next. But a fish cartoon makes him look stupid—and he is far from that.

So we experimented with some gambling metaphors. One idea was to turn the White House into a casino, nodding to Mr Trump’s career as a casino mogul. This was fun, but a little familiar. Barack Obama made essentially the same joke in 2011, back when few people took Mr Trump’s desire to be president seriously. An alternative was to show him welcoming visitors to play roulette on the Resolute desk. This neatly conveyed the idea that foreign dignitaries seldom know in advance whether they will win or lose from an encounter with Mr Trump. The trouble with the White-House-as-casino idea, however, is that in the long run the house always wins. Our argument is that foreign policy is more complicated than that, and that although Mr Trump has indeed notched up some wins, his capriciousness often makes America lose out.

A card metaphor works better. Mr Trump is fond of telling people how many cards they hold. And if the game is, say, poker, it is not purely about chance: the players’ skills at calculating odds and reading their opponents matter immensely. Our early sketch suggests a slightly chaotic game, with Mr Trump dealing the cards by tossing them towards the other (unseen) players. We worked this up into a draft cover. Some of us thought this was nearly perfect. Add some cards with dollar signs to the ones with bombs, to illustrate the mixture of economic and military power that Mr Trump wields, and this would nicely capture the unpredictability of geopolitics today. But some of our designers felt that card metaphors are overused on magazine covers. And one senior editor thought the rendering of Mr Trump’s face made him look like a friendly maize farmer rather than a hard-nosed politician.
