I’ve been called an interpretive photographer. I’m not entirely sure what that means but it works for me. Also at https://www.paultimlett.co.uk

Beara Peninsula

On reaching the summit of the magnificent Healy Pass I crested the ridge to be met with this wondrous rainbow, as the torrential rain was driven in sheets from the Atlantic across the hillside below.

Relics of the Famine

Yet another abandoned house. Another relic of the famine? What also struck me about this scene was what seemed like a pointless track heading part way up the hillside beyond. Many such roads were built during the famine years. The poor had to earn their relief.

If black people congregate to live in certain areas maybe it’s so they feel safe from white racist bigots?

The Old Forge

I just wondered to myself – why here? Why establish a forge clinging to the side of a mountain? Apart from the track I was standing on and the hut in the background, there was nothing else here.

When do her parents leave? Should go and see and them off.

Legacy

The deserted village on the mountain slopes of Slievemore on Achill Island, Co. Mayo is a lasting testimony to man’s cruelty and greed. Its people were left to starve, or evicted by greedy landlords to make way for livestock, whilst the abundant cereal crop was exported.

The Gate

I was walking high on The Burren in County Clare when I came across this garden gate propped against a dry stone wall. I stood and looked it, scratched my head and thought “what on earth”.

One of life’s imponderables. Only in Ireland.

Thankfully she’ll never be in a position to act on that commitment.

Without a redistribution of wealth away from the rich we all know where that growth will go.

Fishing Club Hut, Cloonee Louch, Co. Kerry

Fierce wind and heavy showers. Another day in southern Ireland. Behind the hut is a stone jetty, popular with photographers. But I just couldn’t make the shot work so concentrated on the hut and its technicolour roof.

My MP. Truly awful man. Has been going around the constituency in one of his rare visits trying to whip up hatred and fear of refugees from Afghanistan housed locally - most of them here perfectly legally having assisted the British during their presence there. He accused them of being criminals.

Great point about the aristocrat owned estates. Conspicuous by their absence. But also the modern day landed gentry - the hedge fund managers, the asset managers, private equity fund owners. Where are they?

PS if you need someone to show you around Wiltshire’s chalk downland I’d be honoured.

Ooh I bloody love Ravilious. But I love chalk downland even more. Can’t wait for this book.

Kilcatherine Church, Co. Cork

The remains of a 12th century chapel tucked away on a remote coastal road on the beautiful Beara Peninsula. There is evidence of a much earlier Christian monastic settlement here.

The Colours of Cork

The towns and villages of Co. Cork are a riot of colour. How to capture it in just four images?
