What's the latest excuse for bothsidesing colonization and apartheid culminating in a livestreamed genocide?
@BarackObama After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.

Self proclaimed "genius rationalist" eugenicist with a claim to fame being writing a harry potter fanfic is someone to listen to and collaborate with.

timnitgebru.bsky.social
One of the people who they boasted endorsed the AI 2027 thing is a eugenicist cult leader pontificating about at which age children have a "right to life" & whether its the immigrants' "dysgenic (the opposite of eugenic) pressures getting everyone stupider.

Yes we should all just get along.

We are looking forward to this talk next Tuesday with Dr.

about the history of the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) movement and its link to the 20th-century eugenics movement.

Its the modern day version of the white man's burden. Colonialism and empire building at its best, using the same arguments of empires of yore as Karen Hao so eloquently put it in her book, Empire of AI.

This IS the side to fight against, not the side to join in service of some larger goal.
timnitgebru.bsky.social
This isn't a "why can't we all get along" kumbaya moment. Its a moment to understand all the ways in which the people who created OpenAI, Anthropic etc claiming that their machine god will bring utopia, are the actual "existential risks" to humanity.

Raising billions of dollars to "save humanity."

timnitgebru.bsky.social
One side, "AI 2027" is led by a bunch of privileged white people working at the companies causing the other side (AI con/Empire of AI).

One side, the "AI is gonna be so powerful if you don't let US be the AGI builders" is making money from stealing data, killing the environment & exploiting labor.

If your invited keynote speaker works for a company started because OpenAI wasn't basing its work enough on science fiction and said speaker uncritically cites TESCREAList, fictional work masquerading as science, you might not have organized a serious academic gathering.

And mabye that's why he made the comments he made in response to my concerns about race in the article above which I'm not sure you've read.

timnitgebru.bsky.social
But maybe, hear me out, the fact that they're white is salient and that's why I mentioned it before you came here to argue with me. Maybe white men are the ones who think that race and gender doesn't matter because they've been so used to their race and gender being the defaults.

timnitgebru.bsky.social
We no longer have the time nor the space for people who want to come to us with the "I don't see race" or "reverse racism" or "why do you bring up the race and the gender" type comments. Truly.

timnitgebru.bsky.social
I have no time for this nonsense sir, do this stuff elsewhere please.

timnitgebru.bsky.social
Too old to answer to the whole why is race relevant or why is gender relevant thing at this point lol.

To a privileged, out of touch, white dude like him, a hypothetical magical fairy tale scenario that both makes him a godmaker and justifies the current harms this endeavor results in, is clearly more important than real world issues the rest of us face.

They gave the physics prize to the dude who said that ChatGPT is the world's butterfly and GPT3 was a caterpillar.

The dude who told us in 2018 that radiologists should cease to go to school because the profession was gonna be out in 5 years. But 5 years later he just moved on to the next lie.

Back in the day people used to have a slide at the end of their presentations saying "and that's how the brain works" as an inside joke about Hinton since he was known to talk confidently out of his ass.

Now, the Nobel committee brought this upon us like they give the peace prize to genociders.

anyway, here is 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics winner Geoffrey Hinton discussing what we know about large AI models on 60 Minutes.
