I only recently discovered the concept of ocxcanon/self shipping (around 2021) because that was the time I started actively participating in online communities. I was in the creepypasta fandom and yume Ben drowned and Bloody Painter that time I think.

Then came Gohan, kid me was so jealous of Videl lmao😭😭 then I moved on and forgot about it—self shipping—for a while. That is, until sk8 the infinity😭😭 I was in love with Miya Chinen🥹 I still hold him close to my heart but don't romantically yume him anymore🙂‍↔️

I wasn't aware of the concept of self shipping back then but the one I'd consider my very first would be Tenma Matsukaze from Inazuma 11 Go, I think I was around 7-10—possibly younger tbh—at the time. I showed a drawing I made of him to my mom and said he was my boyfriend lol.
