Happy Heavenly Birthday to May Ayim! She would have turned 65 years old today. Although we are not kin, I feel kinship with her. Next August 2026 will mark 30 years since her passing.

After all these years of studying her, I still do not consider myself an expert on her.

They are on to something about academia. teehee.
tnflorvil.bsky.social
Exactly. We are making bank with our books. 😂😂😂😂
tnflorvil.bsky.social
Just a reminder that most academics are not making oodles of money from their university press books. For some reason, people think I am making bank with my Illinois book. I am not rich by any means.

Some make money with trade press books, but that isn't all of us. Thank you.
Adieu!

I hear you. I read other pieces on her and completely forgot her loyalty to WA.

Yes, I am not perfect. People are not perfect. But I mean even Mia acknowledged her death. I don't want to excuse abuse apologism.

Let me also stay in my lane of life writing and teaching this semester.

Yes, grace is an amazing concept. But whew the abuse apologist feels like another level. We can acknowledge she was a fabulous actress while also noting that she was WA's abuse apologist, who told victims to get over it.

Revisionist history...

Trump was president on January 6th 2021. The attempted coup launched by Trump and his supporters was an effort for him to stay in office after losing the election to Joe Biden

While I liked her as an actress, I am sad to remember that Diane Keaton was an abuse apologist, and she thought "victim culture was a horrible shame." She held problematic views.

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

Hundreds of people have been doxxed, fired or threatened for social media posts that were seen as callous or celebratory after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. In a Texas town, people flooded online feeds with attacks that spilled into the real world for a paramedic. nyti.ms/4n7CSND
