Russia doesn't really care if the west believes their lies. The intended audience is the people at home.
So right now, US media is actually helping Kremlin - by givibg them a foreign platform for their bs.

I'm doubting the story too.
In some countries they believe the Putin narrative that this war is going splendidly for Russia. Once reality sets in they probably want to avoid being sent back to the front.
Claiming that they were tricked into enlisting is convenient for getting back home.

In their minds, what they are facing in Ukraine right now are 100% of the NATO military might focused in Ukraine territory.
