ME2 and jade empire have sorta had the opposite journeys in my mind (strictly story wise), where I appreciate jade empire more and ME2 less as time goes on.

So a deus ex machina in the form of the crucible (or something like it) was kinda inevitable. Especially given that the dlc made it clear that the reapers' arrival was imminent.

The structural issue to me is that the ending of 2 forced the writers to scramble around at the beginning of 3. At the end of 2, Shepard hadn't really made any more progress towards "solving" the reapers! In fact they have even less resources than they had at the end of 1!

Tbf, the series had abandoned thematic coherence about 5 minutes into the opening of 2. That game's main plot was comically bad, rescued only by the side quests being really good.

Reducing historical figures and moments to untouchable mythology is not actually respectful towards them. These were real people struggling with many things that we also struggle with
