First Saturday back home after three weeks of travel, and I'm getting cozy with my advance copy of "The Myth of Good Parenting" by @mburtwrites.bsky.social
and @kkramermcginnis.bsky.social. We needed this book so bad, church.

He very literally says that the parent needs to choose "the principle [of parental authority]" over relationship with the straying child. Did all his readers agree with him? Maybe not, but I sure don't remember him being blacklisted over it.

Imagine my surprise when I read about Chuck Swindoll's very adamant opinion that a parent should go no contact with a "rebellious" adult child whose divergent views/behavior threatens the parents authority over their younger children.

I also gained a LOT of context for parent/child alienation in this book. My generation's parents are often upset that their adult children are going no-contact, or close to it, because they have an expectation of unconditional loyalty, regardless of past or current harm.

... that spanking can be experienced as sexual by the child without the adult being aroused. The child may confusingly experience arousal, but even if not, spanking may still be experienced as sexually humiliating (esp by older children).

I appreciated that they named spanking as sexually violating - I think many parents are dimly aware of the *potential* for "some weirdo" to spank kids for their own gratification (probably the reason my parents never allowed anyone else to spank us), but they don't realize ...

Admittedly I haven't read a ton of the literature, but Marissa and Kelsey bring light to the uneasy sexual dynamics of spanking better and more thoroughly than anyone I've seen (see esp. ch. 8).

"Liturgized spanking" is VERY well-expressed and useful handle to describe the hyper-spiritual ritualization surrounding spanking in recent Christian teaching & practice, and I think it will be part of the lexicon for discussing these issues for years to come. (ch.7)

A Christianity that is known for its cruelty is a Christianity that no longer knows Christ.

I think these guys make up random fake virtues (like, spending money from envelopes of cash) to compensate for the fact that they don't have any real ones.
