In honor of National Banned Books Week, I’m resharing the biggest project of my collegiate career: my multi-part senior project — a deep dive into censorship, stories, and the power of reading. 📚✨

Not a novel idea: The lasting narrative of book bans—Part I in a series
In this multi-part Statehouse File special report, Sydney Byerly pages back through the long history of book banning, asking what's behind Indiana's recent move to empty its shelves.

Banned Books Week is about celebrating the freedom to read and committing to the fight against censorship.
Here in Indiana, our Republican supermajority has made it easy for extremist groups to impose their small-minded views on schools and public libraries, controlling what we can read.

Gratitude post: This made the inner little girl in me so happy today. The quiet little ginger girl who didn’t grow up with much but found immense joy in disappearing into books to escape from reality. 📚💙 #booksky
Matt Lillywhite on Substack

I overheard a teenager at the library desk ask if she could get a card.
The clerk said she'd need proof of address.
The girl shook her head. "We don't have one right now."
The clerk reached under the counter. "Then here's a temporary card. You can still check out books."
Some systems prevent you from stepping through the door to a fulfilling life.
Libraries hand you the key.

People don't understand what a big deal it is for a childhood trauma survivor to depend on others, & god forbid, ask for help. When you've had to be dependent on people who hurt you, you try to not need people. If you know someone like this please be patient, clear, & kind.

We went to a premiere last night of @rbreich.bsky.social’s Last Class and the fact that he has been speaking of income equality for 40-something years really shines a light on just how long this plan for an oligarch takeover has been in the works.

I can not emphasize enough just how thrilled I was when @authordanbrown.bsky.social announced his new book — I preordered it immediately. The inside cover has a hidden message and oh how accurate it is. #booksky

Tonight, I got to see Phil Rosenthal of Somebody Feed Phil and it may have been more profound than when I saw the Dalai Lama. He reminded us to find the joy in life, laugh more, and that immigrants make America what it is today. I wish I could bottle his joy for the days I need it most.
