But other things like gameplay enhancements (the new combo modifiers, cancel windows, perfect blocking, the attraction flow disabler, etc) stemmed from lessons the vanilla release taught the dev team likely in the same way that vanilla KH2 did back then, so the growing pains were necessary

I think some comparisons between 2FM and vanilla 3 are fair from the perspective that much of what 2FM introduced that made it such an iconic release were outright missing from 3 at launch, like a Critical Mode and ANY endgame content, despite the game being in development hell for almost 7 years

Yeah tbh I don't even play the games for the story anymore because it's gone totally off the deep end, the gameplay just scratches an itch no other action RPG has for me (and of course the nostalgia factor is also there)

Vanilla to Vanilla I still think 2 was a better game, especially story wise, but neither of those versions are the experience a new player gets anymore. I've always seen 2FM as the "real" version anyway so it's only fair I give 3 the same courtesy and judge it by its post-Re:Mind state now

I need to do a fresh playthrough of the main game again someday because I have bad memories of my first ever Critical Mode clear but it was very likely me having skill issues and being too young to admit it lol. I want to love this game now that I've forgiven them for the mediocre vanilla experience

Still in disbelief KH3 Re:Mind rose from the ashes of KH3 vanilla, like the dev team really just Did That and redeemed themselves four times over, in many ways surpassing even KH2's combat and boss design in a single DLC
