…which I think raises our readerly expectations for consistency, relevance of multiple levels of reading, etc. A plain style with only occasional flights of fancy would really serve the purpose better

Same here, though I suspect it was in Jules Verne (in an old translation) that I encountered the literal meaning.

I don’t blame the author for thinking of the word as a non-figurative equivalent of “vituperation”. But they’re writing quite elaborately and ornamentally overall…
