“Robins appear when loved ones are near.” In British folklore, the robin is seen as a spirit messenger, a bird of comfort and compassion. Its appearance is often thought to be a brief visitation from a loved one’s spirit, perhaps at a time of passing or mourning. #FolkloreSunday
A European robin perched on a branch, its bright orange-red breast glowing against soft brown and grey feathers. Fresh green leaves are unfolding around it, with a blurred background of pale spring light.

"Many haws, many sloes, many cold toes!"

Old country wisdom says that an abundance of hawthorn berries and sloes in autumn is a sure sign of a cold winter to come. Have you seen a plentiful crop of haws and sloes in the hedgerows near you?

#WednesdayWisdom #nature #folklore
Four-panel collage of autumn berries. Left: clusters of bright red hawthorn haws (Crataegus monogyna) among green leaves. Top middle: close-up of blue-black sloes (Prunus spinosa). Top right: another bunch of hawthorn haws. Bottom right: branches heavy with sloes among green foliage and lichen.

Wolfsbane, or monkshood (Aconitum napellus), is a deadly flower tied to werewolf lore. In medieval Europe it was said to repel or cure lycanthropy, the power or curse of turning into a wolf. Some tales claim witches used wolfsbane ointments to change shape. #FairytaleTuesday
Collage of wolfsbane and werewolf lore. Top left: 1941 pulp illustration of a werewolf crouched in moonlit woodland (Weird Tales, “The Werewolf Howls”). Right and bottom: close-up photos of purple wolfsbane (monkshood) flowers with green foliage.

I hope it will flower soon for you! 💜

What a great view! I certainly will try to post some photos. I keep taking photos at the moment and then I don’t seem to get time to load them onto the computer and go through them. I’ll perhaps take some photos on my phone to share while I’m there. Quicker and easier 😂

Their white-winged seeds are sowing,
And in the fields still green and fair,
Late aftermaths are growing.”

Amazing! I have a pink patio rose called ‘The Fairy’ that never seems to get the memo when autumn arrives. She sometimes flowers all the way through to December, if we don’t get a very hard frost.

The Cailleach, of Celtic myth, is winter’s Faerie Queen and ancient hag. At Samhain she strikes the earth with her blackthorn staff, withering fields and forests to sleep. Her breath brings frost; her touch, stillness. Until Imbolc, she rules with ice and shadow. #FolkloreSunday
Close-up of autumn leaves edged with white frost, their colours of green, yellow, orange and brown glowing against a blurred grey background.

That’s a good way to describe some of the Dahlias. They are definitely works of art!

Wonderful! Roses that bloom all the way through to autumn are extra special!

I know what you mean, we have a lot of trees that turn that colour. I am going to Thenford arboretum next weekend, and I can’t wait. There should be a wonderful display of colour there!

Thank you so much, Ann! 😊💐

“Then I sally forth, half sad, half proud,
And I come to the velvet, imperial crowd,
The wine-red, the gold, the crimson, the pied—
The dahlias that reign by the garden-side."
- Edith M. Thomas (1854-1925).

The scent of the flowers when they are in bloom is absolutely beautiful! It would be lovely to sit beneath one. There is an avenue of them through our village churchyard that lined a long gone driveway to an old house (long gone too!). The scent they produce is quite incredible and travels far.
