Another thing which works in a crowded room with lots of people talking is to lightly press on your tragus (ooer mrs) which mutes anything coming from behind and does help. Although you look like Ian Anderson, especially if you happen to be standing on one leg and carrying a flute

I have subtitles on for pretty much everything these days. My hearing is apparently 'within normal limits' for my age (mid-thirties 😋) but I have suffered from the Cocktail Party effect for some time, and subtitles just resolve that when the soundtrack is noisy and to my ears confused
