I really do like how Sheila spends so much of her time yearning for death, how it takes a literal apocalypse and defeating the embodiment of despair for her start changing her mind that maybe existing isn't so terrible at all? and then cillian dies 😭

Feeling like she did something good, something that mattered, and her existence made someone's life better and she felt less lonely for a little while would go a long way towards making her journey Worth It.

And I think most people here by now know that she succeeds in bringing him back to life, and she is DETERMINED to facilitate a life for Cillian that he didn't get to experience before, between his atrocious upbringing under his father and his responsibilities/burdens as Warrior of Light

So naturally she starts going insane from grief. I think she maintains a good façade around others since Judas needs help filling Cillian's shoes, and I think this current lull between plot points in MSQ is when her mask starts slipping, and she starts thinking more about her abilities...

BUT THEN.. YOU KNOW.. CILLIAN DIES. And it's SUCH A PUNCH TO THE GUT and reaffirms her beliefs that bad things happen to people she cares about!!! and that she should never get too comfortable because any small happiness or contentment will always be snatched away from her!!!

But Cillian's presence was such a salve to her miserable existence that she was fine with keeping her feelings to herself. She figured they would eventually fade, and she'd be able to continue enjoying their friendship without the niggling feeling of Longing for what she knows she can't have.

But also because she was Very Aware of Rydell's feelings for Cillian, and she didn't want to come between them because she felt like it was unfair to Rydell that she got to spend so much time traveling with Cillian while he did not...

She was content to be near him even if she had no intention of acting on her feelings for him for various reasons... First & foremost because she believes is cursed, her relationships are always doomed to fail, and anyone she grows close to will inevitably suffer a terrible fate.

BUT CILLIAN CHANGES THAT... by god does he actually try to understand Sheila and help her with her traumas even when she fights him nearly every step of the way because her trust is not easily earned, and she doesn't think her issues can be fixed.

Her experiences didn't make her stronger, teach her any wisdom, or provide anything of value. They just made her increasingly bitter and lonely and mistrustful and angry and broken. Not worth it, please just put her out of her misery so she can rest and finally have the peace she deserves.

She doesn't even remember anything during the times she is dead. It's not like her spirit is peacefully floating around in the aetherial sea or anything, so it's not like she can truly appreciate what Being Dead Is Like, but she knows that Nothingness is better than the alternative.

By the time she meets Cillian, she is so deep in the trenches of depression that she prefers to spend *most* of her time Dead (when she's not rotting on his couch in a near catatonic state) because existence is UNBEARABLE.

She has spent nearly every waking moment wishing she had stayed dead ever since she woke up & discovered what Nazarov did to her. That desire has only grown stronger in the decade since then, swelling within this chasm of loneliness that deepens with every loss & abandonment she's experienced.

god ... If you had asked Sheila this *before* she met Cillian, she would have said no. She is a spectacle of negative character development—the vast majority of her experiences as an adult have not made her a better person... her experiences broke the better person she *used* to be.
