It really was just a bunch of fuckin weirdos who do no effort to engender sympathy from the reader and just either ramble on about personal anecdotes (boring) or exactly what kind of communist they are and why you must agree with them (bad)

I took a decent bit of English in undergrad, mostly in writing and creative writing. And wow yeah I don't think I read a piece of published nonfiction from this century that wasn't actively bad or unbearably boring, and I did electrical engineering, my tolerance for boring is expansive.

Maybe I'm lost on the details. Was the revolutionary council toppled by a police-action of the sundered houses or was it gradually subsumed by financial and political influence from the houses, because that drastically changes how it reads between a postmodern or modern period context.

My goat (I'm nowhere near as left-wing as him I just respect the hustle and consistency)

Yeah perhaps I'm being a little to literal in my interpretation, but yeah, it also mirrors well onto the weight of modern corporate power, institutional weakness and democratic decline to an audience less insane than you or I.

Some of the houses may carry titles but they're early capitalists more or less making the rules in the post-monarchoreligious social anarchy. The city they're in maybe also being a sort of rough analogue to the Paris commune or Vienna?

The Shaper's War imho is an analogy of the final loss of power of noblemen and clergy to hard science and capital. I don't think its as much about democratic decline as perhaps the emergence of democracy and liberalism in early industrial society. Their earlier revolution analogous to 1848's

I think Carney deeply dislikes Trump, but he's also a grandmaster at hamming it up with rich assholes
voltageanddoltage.bsky.social
The unspoken response being that not only would he not even understand, he wouldn't care to understand.
voltageanddoltage.bsky.social
If you listen closely he calls Trump a rambling unstable idiot who doesn't know anything about how the economy works, it's just delivered in fluent high-grade Canadian technocratese.

They might as well give the watches out for free and just focus fire anyone who gets one with targeted donation material, probably make more that way.

Crazy how close we got to replacing our entire Leo1 tank fleet with these things. Wonder how roughly ~250 of these stack up to the ~80 Leo 2s we went with in the overall effectiveness of the force (probably poorly considering the 90s-Afghanistan 'Decade of Darkness' in the CAF.

Just got stopped and asked if I had a membership (I do not) on my usual run to sneak into the back of the costco and buy a couple hot dogs, my day is ruined.

We wear specially rated boots to protect against lower voltages but at the voltages we're working with no amount of rubber will save you. We have extra rubber mats and arc Flash suits but those are more to ensure there's something left of you to bury. Our real protection is the station safety design

One step, yeah, I would have genuinely lost it if she just shot the belted A5 off the hip on her first big live western performance.

I guess I should throw something romantic in the old audible rotation between military SciFi and political philosophy

Only his innermost viziers may speak with him, all others must sit behind a silk curtain and receive a written response.

I have some experience with this, when we're converting coal plants to fossil gas it usually results in quite a bit of job loss. There's retraining offered but most of the time the townspeople don't go for it. The town empties out and those who can't/won't leave are poor and bitter.
