I like art and dogs, in that order. I do Magic Art Shows for fun. He/him. Trying to be relevant since ever. I work for an art museum by day.

You did the dragon for 2023.
the purple one is by artist Ivan Shavrin for 2025.

Cripes

As an Old Timey Vorthos from the old mothership forum boards, we used to seek out any jpg of the full art of novels, cripes it was hard, and trade them like contraband.

I finally found some of the paintings in the wild and just bought them. The Thran one I particularly love.

Magic was super hyped for a while to make the Planeswalker symbol artworks and I loved seeing them adapted to each plane. From @rpancoast.bsky.social to @chasestone.bsky.social to @adampaquette.bsky.social and @tituslunter.bsky.social. They made for stellar computer backgrounds to hype a set.

Are these all Magic art?
Yes*

*that asterisk is what separates Facebook groups on where it can be shown, traded or sold.
Live @pindurski.bsky.social's shivan dragon magic con deckbox in 2023, or the Ivan Shavrin one in 2025.
I think these are mega cool!

Magic art is also sometimes design.

Like Steve Prescott creating the first iteration of the Avacyn symbol while in the concept art room, bouncing ideas and plenty of farts between them.

Gimme that Anna Steinbauer working out ideas for Eldraine concept art.

In this case, there isn’t a card directly aligned, but sometimes there is.

Love Jay to pieces, but those world guides aren't art books. What the people want is concept art in books. Then thumbnails, sketches, color studies, finals. ADs don't have time to make them.
That's what people want to see-raw ideas, people love and want to see it. (and cosplay needs the refs)

To the real sickos who actually walked across the street at the "Concept to Compleat”, Magic Con Philadelphia, I remember you.
It was incredible, raw creative energy made by Magic artists that shaped worlds. Day 1 Friday, was all phyrexian concept art. It was incredible.

Aside from the known, I personally collect the most in concept art.
That's the art that goes into the world guide/style guides that art directors send to artists. Make goblins like this, not that, sort of thing. Tyler's here was art award nominated for Throne of Eldraine.

Some comic pages have been nominated for art awards shown below, but weirdly, no covers yet. (and I own one of those variant #1 covers from Tyler Kirkham and love it.)

comic book pages from Flight of the White Cat by Dave Kendall A comic book page by Andrew Robinson from the Magic the Gathering comic Fuel for the Fire, Part II, page 6 Two framed artworks, one in ink (black and white) and one in color. They are of a phyrexian angel, a metalized/fleshy mix unique to the Magic the Gathering IP. This is a variant comic book cover by Tyler Kirkham.

Folks like Matt Adelsperger, and now Mari Hall and squad, the marketing ADs. The art for booster boxes like the stuff @pindurski.bsky.social does? That’s them and they deserve their flowers.

Originally there was one art director - the Jesper Myrfors, Jesse Mason’s favorite Sue Ann Harkey, Ron Spears, our boy Jeremy Jarvis.

But then spectrum the art annual #7 nominated this other art, and the Myths of Magic cover by Mike Sutfin entered the lexicon as voted by peers as GOOD art. 2/20

It’s time to talk about non-card #MTGart and why it’s amazing.

What are some of your favorite pieces of Magic art not from an actual card? They could be from supplemental media, marketing, packaging, concept art, etc.
