Reminiscing on the events that led Thunderclan's current leadership to power, we open the story with their soon-to-be healer, Mothfire, her defiance of the future set for her by her father, and the loss of the cat destined to walk the path she now chooses.

one moon ago. . .

THERE WERE A FEW FINAL STREAMS OF SUNLIGHT dappling the soft soil floor of the healer's den, growing longer and paler as the sun slowly approached the horizon. It was nearly evening, and soon the den would be pitch black unless the stars decided to offer their measly light.

Mothfire didn't think they would. They had done nothing lately but watch as her clan suffered.

Her green eyes moved over the tiny tomcat lying beside her. Mantispaw's pelt stretched thin across his bones, pockmarked with ugly red scratches and patches of missing fur. His muzzle was streaked with the dried remnants of white foam, and his paws - so, so small - twitched and jerked every so often, though he'd been unconscious since early that morning. Mothfire talked to him anyways, murmuring softly when his muscles locked up and pressing herbs to his open wounds - the same herbs Mantispaw had so gently applied to her father in his final days.

She knew he was going to die; the whole of ThunderClan knew it. The agony wasn't in the knowledge, but the waiting. She'd sat beside him for days now, trying her best to coax him into eating small bits of herbs or freshkill with no success. Sitting here with him gave her something to focus on - Mothfire could watch for the ever-slowing rise of his flank, hear his rattling breathing in the silence of the den, do her best to keep him comfortable as he died. It meant she didn't need to consider the implications of his death, what it would mean for ThunderClan, for her, when she left that den. Alone.

Beetlestar had died only a few days earlier. Marigoldwind was one of the first to succumb to the Stranglefoam. Mantispaw wasn't long for this world either. ThunderClan would, in a few short hours, likely before the sun rose again, be left without leadership. A flash of raw grief tugged at her chest. Her father knew the predicament the Clan was headed towards, and when he started showing symptoms of the disease, faced…
