Founded in 1987 by the Jesuits Eastern Africa Province, Eastern Africa Jesuits, St. Joseph continues to provide affordable, quality training to ensure that young people are prepared not just for jobs, but for meaningful lives of service and contribution.

They also stepped into the classrooms and workshops of the St. Joseph Technical Training Institute. There, students shared how they are learning practical skills that will open doors to brighter futures.

CJI staff visiting our Jesuit partners in Africa have arrived in Zambia! 🇿🇲
In Lusaka, they visited the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection, where they witnessed the work being done to empower citizens to speak up for good governance, transparency, & servant leadership.

Jenny and Juan also met with both regional and national staff of Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). CJI supports a JRS Kenya initiative that helps urban refugees gain the tools and skills they need to generate income and rebuild their lives.

They also spent time with the team at the Jesuit Hakimani Centre, whose work focuses on faith, social justice, and peacebuilding. The centre, run by the Jesuits of Eastern Africa & supported by CJI, is committed to addressing the social issues that affect local communities.

CJI Executive Director Jenny Cafiso and International Programs Coordinator Juan Emilio Hernandez are continuing their visit with Jesuit partners across Africa. In Nairobi, they visited Fr. John Legge, SJ one of only two Canadian Jesuit missionaries still serving overseas.

We were honoured to welcome Fr. Rigobert Kyungu SJ, Provincial for Central Africa Province, and Fr. Paulin Mwibonere S.J, to our Toronto office. Fr. Rigobert is currently visiting Canada, while Fr. Paulin, originally from Kinshasa, DRC, is studying at Regis College.

Representatives from @weareCJI @wearecji.bsky.social @irishjesuitsint.bsky.social visited the Mazzolari Teachers Training College in South Sudan, where Jesuits are training 150 teachers every year to fight illiteracy—especially among women & girls.

Yet, there is hope as construction of a third block of three new classrooms is underway. Although the school has no computer or electricity, the conviction and eagerness to learn within these walls are inspiring.

Despite significant challenges, 279 students from Primary 1 to Primary 6 are working hard. The main hurdle remains recruiting teachers due to the school’s remote location—currently, only one female teacher serves the school.

From August 24–29, CJI participated in the Meeting of the Indigenous Solidarity and Apostolate Network (RSAI) in Cerocahui, Chihuahua, Mexico. Across languages and cultures — voices rose in solidarity, with stories of struggle and resilience, and a commitment to justice and hope.
