First line is spoken by the main character’s aunt. She tells them to have a good day. She’s a good aunt/guardian figure throughout the story. She makes some mistakes (some *very big* mistakes that alter the trajectory of Cainen’s entire life lol) but she’s awesome and ultimately a good role model.

I blink and my mind snaps out of my body
like a rubber band.
"You first," Wright says, pointing at Andee.
"You don't get to act like some moral crusader against controlling boyfriends when you're acting just as controlling. Neither one of you are in charge.
Get over it. Neither one of you gets to decide who we are."
"We?" Andee asks.
"Yes. Keep up. We've been over this at least twice. And you—" I- Wright, we, whatever— turn towards Red. "You, buddy, should never have gotten involved in the conversation in the first place.
"But—" Red protests.
Wright cuts him off.
"You don't have to like Andee. Andee
doesn't have to like you. But all you did was throw gas on the fire. You don't get to act all butthurt when it blows up in your face."
"You're Wright, aren't you?" Andee asks.
"Did Cainen let you out?"
"It doesn't matter who I am. Trust me when
I say I'm speaking for both of us."
Red scoffs.
"Yeah, right."
"Shut up. Just because Cainen puts up with
you doesn't mean I have to. I'm not your friend.
I'm not either of your friends. I'm here because even writhing in the eternal torment of your frail adolescent minds is better than being a speck of dust floating in an endless void with nothing but bad memories to keep you company."

I can see it now, if only for a second. He doesn't look like an adult. He looks just like me— sixteen. Just a socially awkward, screwed up teenager trying to find his place in the world.
But then his face falls back into that emotionless mask, and he's back to looking like he's old enough to drink.

The main character gets better after realizing that the love interests are terrible people and separating himself from them. He’s not exactly a bad person at the start, just… really dumb lol. So this forces him to grow up in a lot of ways and take some time for himself.

My main character improves a lot from the beginning of the story. A side character gets an official redemption arc. The love interest(s) both get an anti-redemption arc and become increasingly horrible. Everyone is changed by the end, one way or another…

"And how's that going for you?"

The room is spinning. I can't deal with Red right now, on top of everything else. I just want to be left alone. I'm still crying. For all his efforts, I still don't trust him nearly enough to let him see me this vulnerable. God, he has the worst timing.
"Sorry you came all this way, Red, but I'm not exactly in the mood for socializing. Leave me alone."
"You don't have to talk. I just wanted to... make sure you were okay. You know, like... moral support."
"I'm clearly not okay. That's your cue to
leave me alone."
"I'd say it's the opposite."
"Oh, piss off. You think you're some kind of
savior? You gonna fix me like Marsheen, huh?"
"No. That's not what I-"
"Good. Then leave."

Winter break comes far too quickly.
I never thought I'd hate being at home more than being at school. Especially a school like Forest Step. I don't have to worry about dodging Mr.
Smith's class, or avoiding Eva in the cafeteria.
Unfortunately, I have to worry about the much more difficult problem: dodging Aunt Tracy.

In one of the stories I wrote as a teen I had a character die and come back to life no less than three times. That was… perhaps… excessive.

In my current WIP everyone only dies once… but in my heart there’s one character who should have lived (even if that isn’t possible for the story).

I learn how to leave.
One moment I'm there, watching my body
in third person while Wright goes through the motions, and the next I'm... not. I can't see anything. I can't feel anything. I can't be anything.
I'm not Cainen. I have no body.
It doesn't hurt, exactly, but it's certainly not pleasant. I imagine if butter could feel, this is what it would feel like to be spread on toast. melting away into nothing, scattered across an infinite space, losing form and function until there is no more space between you and the bread. I can't even tell how long I'm there. Any attempt to count the seconds quickly devolves into an echoing one over and over again. I have no voice. No thoughts. And so I cannot count.
Cainen, come back.
I'm not sure whose voice it is. Wright's?
Red's? Mine?
But it works.
The force of being rocketed back into my
body is enough to make me stumble.

Andee is saying when I tune back into the conversation. "I don't care if he gave up control.
Give it back to him."
"That's not how it works," Wright says.
"You people always think in such binary terms. It's not him or me, it's him and me."
"Don't lecture me on binary terms," Andee snaps back. "Trust me, I know all about binaries.
And breaking them. I've been doing it for years now."
"And I've been doing it before the word transgender even existed," Wright says. "I've been men. I've been women. I've been everything in between."
"You haven't been anything," Andee says.
"You aren't a person. You aren't human. Stop pretending you are. You might be able to fool Cainen, but you can't fool me. I know what you are.
You're a curse."
"I'm just trying to survive. Just like anyone
else. Sure, maybe I'm selfish. But I'm not malicious. Why would I mess with the host? It's my body too."
"It's not your body."
"It is. And that doesn't mean I'm taking it from anyone. It's my body and it's Cainen's. And it's not yours. Get over it."

And the other side character (who will remain unnamed for spoiler reasons) follows orders obsessively for their own safety. Then they lose half their frontal lobe for Plot Reasons and have no more inhibitions, which goes… about as well as you’d expect lol.

Red will definitely not follow orders (and in fact makes a habit of deliberately breaking Cainen’s boundaries) unless he feels like there’s something he can gain from it.
Another side character that I love, Annabelle, is for sure defiant, and also skilled enough to get away with it 99% of the time.
