One thing I love about Kotoko's works is that, despite them being super shoujo with scenes that would often make me wince and groan, the MCs are often pretty much grounded and three dimensional, so I'd find myself really enjoying her stories

We got freaking Gaia omfg 😂😂😂 I am salty jdhdhdj no it's not that I hate hate her. I just wanna ask why we got the protagonist or main party members for all the other games but they decided on a side character from a side content for ffxiv regardless of her popularity 😩

Imo it shouldn't be about making villains sympathetic, but more about grounding them in reality.

Said reason doesn't always have to be sympathetic, but it should give us a glimpse of the villain's psyche and the role their society / community / environment has in shaping it. Idk guess I'm just someone who likes to shed light on why someone is the way they are even when it doesnt take away

While I prefer villains who aren't evil just for evil's sake, I do think a simple reason like "because that's just the way they were brought up" is enough. I think every character needs to have a reason why they are the way they are bc our behaviors are inherently shaped by our environment.

I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been

I'm not saying you shouldn't try to understand people- you should! But sometimes you ask why someone is racist and they say "bc I hate them", and you say ok bit they are people. "People who are lesser and make me uncomfortable". Don't you think you should ask why? Try to see them as equals? "No."

Can those villains be interesting? Obviously! Can it be interesting to have a villain that is just fucking evil abd very powerful? YES. Why do you think so many early comic villains are just evil? Lots of people JUST SUCK, and acknowledging that creates a more complex world for readers to recon with
