Are any of my fellow writers using Scrivener? I'm trying to improve my process, but I can't really find the right software to use. Scrivener comes up often, but it's $60. I've been trying to make the most of Obsidian MD, but I'm not happy.

It's hard for me to exactly put to words what draws me so much to it. Before anyone comes to a wrong conclusion, it does draw out dread and sadness out of me as it would with anyone. I don't feel good about making my characters experience loss. But it's captivating to me all the same.

I'm fascinated by it, the emotion of losing someone or something important is so strong, it tugs at my heartstrings. What I often explore is not even the direct, immediate loss of a sudden death, but rather the slow, creeping kind that you realize you are facing over time.

I've lost dogs to death, which I do consider family, but I wouldn't say I've had to deal with loss more than the average person, I would even say that I have less experience with it than usual. Yet in almost all my stories, bar a few exceptions, loss is an integral part of the story.

Some introspective while I have some downtime at work: I wonder why I explore the concept of loss so much in my stories. I haven't experienced it myself in the degree that my characters have - all of my close relatives still live and are in contact with me. I haven't lost a friend to death.
