soft, protective Hubert for your viewing pleasure

His sun-kissed complexion went pale, and his lips twisted into something ugly, if only for a moment before he schooled it back to a forced smile that did not reach his eyes. He murmured to himself, "Ah, it is just a bridge."

Hubert maneuvered around the cushions and stacks of papers and closed the curtains on either side of the carriage until only slivers of light made it through. There was no need to see it grow closer. And there was certainly no need to stir up Ferdinand's anxiety on the affair. If Hubert could help it, Ferdinand wouldn't know when they were crossing over the river until it had already happened.

In the dim light, he thought he saw Ferdinand's shoulders slump with relief. Just a river indeed.

He gently placed a hand on Ferdinand's knee. "Opalescence had a foal, yes? Tell me about it."

"Of course."

Hubert listened for a few minutes, and Ferdinand seemed to truly be getting lost in his telling. The foal had recently been introduced to other horses at the stables, which was going well. It was strong and determined like its mother. Ferdinand thought it had potential for a mage's mount.

Suddenly, the carriage wheels moved from the smooth, packed dirt road to the rattling of the cobblestone bridge. The clack of the horses' hooves grew sharper. The whole carriage clattered along the bumps and grooves of the stone.

Ferdinand flinched— Hubert reached his arm out to steady him— and he was clamoring to the other side of the carriage.

Hubert wrapped his good arm around him, and Ferdinand pressed against his side. "It is just a bridge... It's just a bridge... /Oh, I'm sorry."/ He covered his face with his hands.

"Hush," Hubert said not unkindly into his hair.

"I did not expect to be so... adverse to a simple river crossing."

"Myrddin is not any river."

"It is not."

If Hubert had it his way, he would have arranged for Ferdinand to be teleported over, but the man insisted on crossing as usual. A hypocrite, to call Hubert self-sabotaging when he did the same thing. Perhaps that's one reason they got along. They both understood this sort of thing.

panel 1: eyes wide with shock, ferdinand gasps and apologizes, “saints forgive me! i did not intend—“ but he is interrupted by edelgard and the other black eagles throwing open the doors. edelgard shouts, “ferdinand! dont drink the wine! its been poisoned!”

panel 2: ferdinand sweats as weapons and magic fly past him, presumably taking out his would-be assassinators. he mutters, “oh. right. i see. well… i am afraid that, um, i have already had the wine. could that be… bad? or…”

panel 3: linhardt picks his way through the tangle of bodies with an, “eugh. blood. ew.”

panel 4: he picks up a small glass between pinched fingers and announces, “found the vial. it’s empty.” from offscreen ferdinand adds, “see… that sounds quite bad.”

panel 1: edelgard turns to hubert and asks, “hubert. do you recognize it? what are his odds?” hubert looks concerned as he reaches for the vial. a concerned petra and terrified bernie stand behind him.

panel 3: ferdinand sweats and listens. hubert says, “uninspired, even,” as ferdinand parrots, “uninspired…” hubert adds, “that dosage would have killed the average man, but i expect ferdinand will handle it without much more than some indigestion.”ferdinand mumbles, “the average… indigestion…”

panel 3: “yes!” ferdinand says. “and neither have i—“ he cuts off. his eyes narrow suspiciously and a tea bag and tea cup manifest in his mind as he think about his tea and coffee breaks with hubert. he says, “wait.”

panel 4: a tiny ferdinand leans furiously toward hubert and his raised shoulders, snapping, “hubert von vestra. HAVE YOU BEEN POISONING ME?!” hubert winces and admits, “technically it’s called mithridatism…”
