charlastor banter is so much fun

Whiskey warms her stomach, then bubbles and spreads to every extremity. It’s a weightless, floaty feeling, a pleasant buzz in her skull. “So, no more smoking. What about killing people? You still doing that?”

Alastor promptly chokes on his sip. She watches with idle fascination as he coughs, composure slipping. “My dear,” he rasps once recovered, “why circle the subject when you can impale it outright? A little forewarning next time, perhaps. Be straightforward.”

“That was already—straightfer—straightforth,” she stumbles, annoyed at herself, and irritated that his posturing cadence is still so easily accessible to him. How is he still able to speak like that, she wonders, even knowing that he’d always been able to. “That was direct. How else am I supposed to ask?”

“Withdrawn,” he snips, dragging the back of his hand over his mouth before muttering: “preferably not at all…”
