If you go to Dubrovnik, take the cable car up Mount Srd. You will get views like this one.

We actually booked through a tour group, so transportation was provided and hotels were already booked. Dubrovnik is well worth seeing, as well as smaller towns on the Istrian Peninsular. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is a must.
