Also this con artist named Andrew Wakefield wanted to sell his personally developed measles vaccine, so he made up a fake study about how the most popular MMR vaccine at the time caused autism, in order to generate a market for it, and a bunch of paranoid irrational bigots latched onto it.

Without the critical thinking skills to recognize the flaws in propaganda, people are much more susceptible to it, and people who are in emotional distress (due to their economic situation for example) are also generally less rational decision makers.

Public schools don't teach critical thinking because it can lead to people questioning the economic inequality that capitalism requires to function. Far right wing religious wackos don't homeschool their kids in critical thinking because it can lead to them questioning their indoctrination.

It's complicated, and there are a lot of factors involved. The consequences of the economic inequality inherent in capitalism are becoming harder and harder to ignore, and so those who feel they benefit from it getting even worse are trying to blame the problems it causes on other things.
