Got to see Neil and MJ in the last three days, and even MJ playing Neil.

It’s gonna take a lot of love.

That’s a wrap. The train, the same one I boarded in Green River, arrived *ahead* of schedule.

Takeaway: no, we don’t have high-speed rail in the US. But we do have low-speed rail, and it’s by far the most civilized way to travel from rural southern Utah to Oakland.

Made it to Sacramento, an excuse for my periodic reminder that if the great flood of 1862 were to happen today—even with CO River reservoirs at historic lows—lakes Powell and Mead would fill before the rain stopped. The Hoover and Glen Canyon dams would likely be destroyed

Ironically, Imperial Valley farmers have a better solution for Glen and Grand Canyon health than these conservation groups: modify Glen Canyon Dam, prevent dead pool on Lake Powell, and restore Glen Canyon. savethecolorado.org/wp-content/u...

In their "cooperative conservation" proposal for CO River management, these "environmental" groups claim partially refilling Lake Powell would help Grand Canyon. They ignore the remarkable ecological recovery already underway in Glen Canyon. waterforcolorado.org/wp-content/u...

Damn the dam, smash the bass

When tributaries flash flood, the sediment they carry into the Colorado suppresses bass populations. Will it be enough to stop bass from establishing in the Grand? That's unclear. But bypassing the dam and allowing the muddy, warm Colorado to flow again, would likely help chub and hurt bass.
Assessing the potential for Smallmouth Bass population establishment in Grand Canyon
ABSTRACTObjective. The expansion of nonnative Smallmouth Bass Micropterus dolomieu into the Grand Canyon ecosystem downstream of Glen Canyon Dam is widely

Low water levels in Lake Powell allowed invasive, predatory smallmouth bass to pass through the Glen Canyon Dam and into the Grand Canyon several years ago, threatening endangered humpback chub. Warmer releases from the dam have also likely benefitted chub, according to new study. 1/2
