Nice view of the romanesque church and the medieval castle in Bad Münstereifel.

Satzvey castle was built during the middle ages. The water filled moat is typical for castles in locations that are not protected naturally by altitude. It got its fairytale like look through modifications during the 19th century.

Hengebach castle is located in a strategically well chosen location on a mountain above the Rur river, overlooking the conjunction of several valleys in the northern Eifel. It was built originally for the lords of Hengebach and later expanded when it came into possession of the count of Jülich.
On the stone benches in the corners of the gothic window are sitting noble ladies engaged in a chat while enjoying the view over the valley.
A beautiful and well preserved room in Nideggen castle. With some imagination you can travel 700 years back in time and see a fire burning in the chimney. The floor with a star pattern in the stones is perhaps covered with a fur.
Tensions between Jülich and Cologne were so heated that several times an archbishop of Cologne was held prisoner at the castle.

It was built in 1177 for the count of Jülich as a stronghold in the northern Eifel to secure his possessions in the area against the presence of the electorate of Cologne in the region.
The keep of Nideggen castle is a massive structure that served as a symbol of power and contained living quarters for the lord of the castle.
The citizens of Nideggen rebuilt their town after it was destroyed by the French in the 17th century. Parts if its medieval city fortifications and a romanesque church from 1177 are well preserved. The town offers a picturesque ensemble of red sandstone buildings from 9 centuries.

The oldest part of Kasselburg castle was built in the 12th century under the lords of Castel north of Gerolstein in the Eifel region. Later the owner changed many times until it ended up in the hands of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Its double tower is a remarkable feature.

What amazing craftsmanship they had at Steinfeld monastery in the 18th century.

Steinfeld monastery is a place that has seen many ups and downs in history. Its origins date back to the middle ages. As you can see in its architecture it had a blooming period during the late 18th century.
Its garden of silence is a perfect place for a moment of contemplation.

Today's picture was taken in the Eifel village Olef, which preserved its historical centre with houses from the 18th century and a medieval church. There used to go a railway right through the village. The tracks are still there, but the line is abandoned.

Hiking on the Eifel trail you pass by beautiful old mansions like this.
A monumental place with a dark history. Ordensburg Vogelsang was built by the nazi terror regime in the 1930ies as a facility for the indoctrination of young men.
It's troubling to see how bad ideas from the past seem to have a revival these days.
Monschau castle was built in the 12th century for the counts of Limburg. The big battery tower on the right side was built in 1543 - 1558 for light cannons. After its restoration in the 19th century the castle is now used as a youth hostel and a retirement home.
Today it's a museum that shows the rooms fully equipped in the style of that time.
The red house in Monschau was built in 1760 for the clothier and merchant Johann Heinrich Scheibler, who succeeded in marketing his cloth all over Europe. It is a unique and well preserved example of an 18th century residential building and warehouse for a wealthy family of the bourgeoisie.
Another autumn greeting from the historical town centre of Monschau. Walking through the streets feels like traveling in time.
This looks amazing! I'll definitely buy it.
Monschau is a town that became wealthy in the 18th century through the weaver industry. With the decline of that local industry because of industrialisation and bigger factories in the big cities the town got frozen in time.
Some impressions of the medieval city fortifications of Cochem. It's remarkable how the terraced walls block the entrance to the city, incorporating the mountain and the river into the city's defense system.

Its architect combined elements of a medieval castle that wouldn't have made sense in a real building complex from the middle ages. But it's still nice to look at and you can walk around freely in the terraced courtyards.
