Review of my PolyViola concert at this year’s Venice Music Biennale / La Biennale di Venezia (English version of the original Italian):
“The first weekend of events of the Biennale Musica concludes at the space of Forte Marghera, an evocative location that would make acts like Black Sun Productions and Throbbing Gristle happy, in which three artists decline the verb of experimental electronics in the light of as many performances in which rendering and process start from a reflection on the concept of ‘sound extraction.’ A generative perspective that gives rise to three experiences in which IDM, minimal, electro, industrial and much more come together in a vision that does not exclude the spectacularization of the gesture and the concept of unconventional sonification of instruments that, decontextualized, become both sonic and cultural objects in their own right. A perspective that in the case of Zsolt Sőrés Ahad, Hungarian composer, instrumentalist, and intermedia artist is based on the creation of electroacoustic events from the interpolation of a wide range of sounds originated by a five-string viola. An interplay between bodies (that of the artist, the viola and the bow) that move through physical space relating to each other in sometimes docile, sometimes impetuous and unconventional ways, releasing glitches, reverberations and broadsides that configure Tangerine Dream-like synth evocations. An ascendancy, the kraut/kosmische one, in which the fullness of patterns originated by the viola (as much through a canonical use of the bow as through pizzicato, up to percussive raging on the body of the instrument) alternates with material-concrete reconstructions of sound.”
