If it hasn't been said, I'll say it: No woman of color would ever be defended in this "she's just a smol bean" fashion & many Black, Latina, Asian & Indigenous women have had their lives & careers destroyed for nothing, or for far, far less. Same goes for trans women. These are just fucking facts.
Possibly the only thing more freakish than Nuzzi's prose is the contortions her defenders twist themselves into. "She's not just hot, but she definitely is hot, while also being a vulnerable smol child. Also, criticizing her is sexist."

I’m sure @edzitron.com is right (he’s probably forgotten more about this than I know) but damn, there really SHOULD be laws against the type of insane marketing that the GenAI companies have engaged in
I believe that NVIDIA is breaking no laws, committing no fraud, and not doing anything other than forcing partners to buy endless GPUs, taking advantage of exec ignorance and FOMO. Repercussions will be the company's main revenue source going away (NVDA won't die)
@edzitron.com i know its annoyng asking the same question but i really want to know your opinion if nvida will survive all of this not only the bubble but all that coming after i really dont think they can go withow any repercutions maybe not in u.s with their current administration but in the EU?

Journalism costs money and I don’t think people appreciate how little most journos who do great work are paid. I don’t like the paywall model, but until something different comes along *cough* breaking up the ad duopoly *cough* anyone who bitches about it is just being dickish.
FYI this is an immediate block. You’re under no obligation to pay for my or anyone else’s work, but you won’t come onto my feed to complain about us earning a living.

Once again, we are not required to pretend to be stupid. Farage is clearly, obviously, patently racist. His entire career has been built on it.
I agree that we should not judge Farage solely on the racist things he said when he was a kid. We should also judge him on the racist things he has done with the entire rest of his life.

Not to go all Kevin Keegan, but I would love it - LOVE IT - if columnists had to actually engage with this sort of criticism of their slapdash half-thoughts.

Wouldn't it be lovely if Phillips next piece had to be a sincere apology for impugning the work of actual journalists? Won't hold my breath
On a purely factual point, Trevor Phillips’s column in the Times misrepresents our reporting in casting doubts on claims that there were more boys called Patel than Smith at Dulwich in 1980 (we did not report 1976 as the year it occurred). 1980 roll shows 13 Patels and 12 Smiths.

0.07 percent of ChatGPT's weekly users show signs of mania or psychosis, while 0.15 percent “have conversations that include explicit indicators of potential suicidal planning or intent.”

Everything is a judgement FFS! In Newsom’s world being anti-trans isn’t a judgement but some innate natural fact but that’s not true!

I comfort myself with the thought that this man ACHES to be President and is going to get crushed in the Dem primary for this shit.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

Very good thread. From what I can see, ‘official’ RW media is still trying to manufacture consent behind the Trump admin, but it’s getting harder. Especially as the economic situation continues to visibility deteriorate
What is next for MAGA?

I wrote about the MAGA civil war, the dynamics shaping this ugly struggle for supremacy on the Right, what Trumpism without Trump might look like, and why MAGA is likely to emerge more ideological and more radical.

Some thoughts from my new piece for @zeit.de:
MAGA: Wie MAGA um die Zeit nach Trump kämpft
Donald Trumps Macht über seine Bewegung wird rissig. Sie streitet schon jetzt, wer nach ihm kommt – und zwar auf ihre Art: Die Rede ist vom MAGA-Bürgerkrieg.

I've been saying this for a year now: the Democrats have missed a gigantic political opportunity--and, at this point, have failed in an ethical obligation--to create a shadow-government health department that dispenses medically accurate information, guidance, and advice.

There are battles that it may make strategic sense not to fight. Trans right - along with the basic rights of any minority - is not one. Once one group is accepted as lesser, anyone can be. There must never be compromise on this
Fuck you of you think trans rights should be sacrificed "for the good of democracy".

The anti democracy machine is the anti-trans machine. Get that through your skulls.

If there’s an algorithm deciding content prioritisation, you’re a publisher? At first blush, this sounds like a good principle. I’d be interested to hear arguments against
This is bang on, if a company selects which posts get seen and promotes them then they ought to be held to the same standard as print media, whether it’s a person selecting what gets viewed or an algorithm.
Good analogy “attacking American companies over garbage”.

Yes, the polluters should pay.

The toxic sludge created by US Tech should be fined like any other ‘externality’ — like oil spills, chemical leaks, poisoning rivers.

I know people in my company are using it for both legal and personal finance advice. I cannot express what a dumb-fuck idea that is. The human cost of Altman et al pushing this technology will be catastrophic
Co-Pilot is currently running an advert of a negotiation where a woman types in 'what's the minimum we can sell for and still hit Q3 targets'

This is *mental*, this person should obviously know this backwards! It's her literal job!
There’s a type of LLM advert which essentially depicts
1) a person using an LLM for a task it absolutely can perform
2) but a person who is qualified to double check its working wouldn’t need to.
Feels like this is the type of “AI misalignment” we should really worry about!

Maybe it's just me, but it felt like after the recent US elections, there was the beginnings of a break with Trump from some of the GOP but that seems to have reversed again. Full court press from the right-wing media to get the party back in line behind the demented God-King
