Truly fucking insane to watch
It is obscene that British media, and her own mother, have fully obscured that Brianna Ghey was murdered.

They've just glossed right over it, smoothly turning it into a narrative about suicide as if that is what happened.

I think this a lot about mathematics. If someone could make a computer that did research mathematics (and fwiw I don't expect that to happen any time soon) it wouldn't stop mathematicians. Might make grants a bit harder to get though...
One comment I sometimes get on my chess posts is that it's demotivating to consider getting into chess now, when a computer can more or less easily beat any human. Respectfully, that's never been persuasive to me. A car can outrace any human, but humans still run track. It's about the joy of doing

This is a fun question because when I think of my favorite books I usually go to those that I had intense emotional reactions to, rather than those that changed my worldview in some clearly identifiable way. First up is Guy Deutscher's *The Unfolding of Language*. 1/7
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

they are able to peel back the ACA because its a shitty half measure but if we had gotten real universal healthcare instead no one would dare touch it because literally everybody on all sides would flip out. one more reason why Democratic incrementalism and "pragmatism" is fucking stupid !!!!!

Theresa May, the buffoon of "Brexit means Brexit", was to the left of Keir Starmer on trans rights.

That's the kind of fact that mainstreaming bigotry forces us to recognise.
The ability of the far right to insist that their views - trans people are lying perverts, climate change is a hoax, immigrants are all thieving, raping scum - are necessarily legitimate & must be given a hearing is already a vast victory for forms of extremism beyond the pale not long ago.
What bothers me is that impartiality and balance are two different and incompatible things. Impartiality means that you don't intervene to put your thumb on the scales. Balance necessarily requires that you intervene to artificially make every issue look like a 50/50.

Men like this are transphobes because they are, deep down, misogynists. They simply believe they are better than women at everything, and in trans women they have found a group it is alright to descriminate against. This man believes cis women are his physical inferiors, and needs you to know that.

I try really, REALLY hard to resist the temptation of conspiratorial thinking. But I have to wonder: did "moderate" Democrats cave because they didn't understand the message of this election? Or because they absolutely did and are terrified of it.

Regular reminder that Axios stories saying Dems are about to cave are likely sourced from GOP staffers trying to make it happen.
Doesn't mean it definitely won't happen. But it's like those NYT stories that Harvard is considering caving (they haven't). The anonymous source was trying to manifest it.

See also how the name Sean is only pronounced Shorn in an English accent, so the pun Shaun the Sheep doesn't really work otherwise.
