My name is Anthony.

I am usually located in London UK, but mostly staying home since 2020; except for occasional visits to Cape Town, South Africa; Boston, Massachusetts and other places.

Cynic, grey in the beard. Tries to cook, and ties to fix things. Happily married. He / Him.

What you need to do is have them not be the protagonist at all, but the person who *helps* the protagonist. Sherlock Holmes is never the one to whom the interesting thing happens, he's the one who investigates interesting things happening to others.

i know a lotta sysadmins around my age, in their 50s

they're choosing to retire rather than get a new job herding slop

let's say there's gonna be a *ton* of opportunities in sysadmin/devops in a couple of years, as it becomes harder to find people who know what the fuck they're doing

After the Rubygems drama, I felt frustrated that I can’t escape evil people trying to dominate my life.

I found myself mourning the future I thought we would have; but also hopeful that it’s not too late to start choosing kindness.

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

This is a genius idea. Charge $10K an hour to explain the accurate truth to companies: 1) AI systems are elaborate financial scams not tech 2) slop coding systems slow devs down by making them think they're coding faster and 3) leave you with a code base no one understands so nobody can maintain
A free, non-VC funded lifestyle business idea:

AI training / workshops for devs

Massive demand from more traditional companies that have budget for this and are seeing devs not really picking up these tools. They want to invest

Doesn’t exist as far as they are aware

The UK needs to ditch FPTP as soon as possible. It's bonkers that a party can get a supermajority on the back of 30% of the popular vote. A result based on proportional representation would more accurately reflect the views of the country.

Absolutely WILD that the development of sofrware proceeded with so little heed to record-keeping that 52 year old source code is a major archaeological trove that requires special tools to gain access to, like it's a treasure room in a sealed royal tomb from 3500 years ago.

There's a big divide between software development as reported by organisations, and software development as it's observed in reality.

e.g., Only 8% of Java devs who, when surveyed, said they practiced Test-Driven Development actually did anything resembling it when their tool activity was analysed.

I've seen a similar big discrepancy between teams who say they do Continuous Integration and teams who are actually merging to the trunk at least once a day. Most are actually working on isolated branches for days or weeks at a time. But those branches have "CI builds" performed on pushes.
