I spent the last day of my vacation taking my mom’s ancient car on a completely unnecessary road-trip, just so I could do this. And I managed to time it, for no good reason, so it happened right as I arrived at the exit for Buc-ee’s (but had to drive through the giant parking lot to get proof)

I think going through formal grieving rituals is something we need to encourage more for all sorts of major obstacles in life where people can easily get mired in the earlier stages of grief
Whenever I talk to someone grieving or who is about to grieve a pet, I tell them to write an obit. I spent 2 years in therapy to prepare for the loss of my “center of gravity” dog. I wrote his obit before he died and never showed it to anyone, but it helps remind me of his impact on the world.
