I have 3 other pet woolly bears, but they’re all hibernating outside under a tarp right now… 😭 I miss them!

I’ve decided to take up the hobby of keeping woollies, and I’m excited to share that journey here

I started this observation journal for my caterpillars, hoping to learn something interesting about them in the long run!

I’ll share one of my entries once in a while, starting with… caterpillar poop!! 😂 (aka frass which is a term for insect poop)

A yellow Hilroy exercise notebook. It has doodles of banded woolly bear caterpillars on its front. The title at the bottom reads “Observation Journal Vol. 1” and “Woolly bear caterpillar / Isabella tiger moth” Page 4 in my notebook. A title line reads “Observation 8” dated on 02/10/25. The entry reads “Caterpillar poop check! Each caterpillar typically makes 10-20 frass when active; healthy frass looks dark green to dark brown and moist, often leaving a wet spot underneath. Learned that some grass will naturally look smaller and dryer after dehydrating for several hours. Caterpillars sometimes pick up their own poop with their thoracic legs to move it aside from where they’re going!” A small doodle of a banded woolly bear caterpillar is at the top of the entry. There is also a page marker at the bottom right corner with another caterpillar doodle.

As described this is my 8” x 10” print showing the centre of a purple echinacea flower. The centre of the flower is orange with black outlines and some yellow bits and occupies the lower right corner. Radiating out are several pink and violet petals. The background is green. On top of the centre of the flower is a transverse-banded flower fly facing the lower right corner. It is yellow and black striped with translucent wings and red-brown eyes.

Have you ever heard of an allonautilus? The fuzzy sea peach at the top of my oil painting is the extremely rare allonautlius. Its only been documented in the wild a couple of times.
