I’m convinced this nightmarish episode is happening because Hegseth is essentially cosplaying the TV version of a national security official. In that vein wanted his very own Situation Room scenario, like the Bin Laden strike, and so they cast dozens of poor dudes in unarmed boats as the terrorists.
Pete Hegseth on Sept 3 talking about the strike on boats where 2 survivors were later killed in a second strike: “I watched it live.”

It sucks that meeting a new class now involves not just going over the syllabus, setting expectations, and trying to establish a rapport, but also trying to deduce whether any of your new students are vigilante right wing operatives out to seek viral controversy at the expense of your job
If you are a chair of a department or supervise grad students, it might be important to collaborate with your colleagues on ways to strategize when a "problem essay" comes down the pike. It's one small way of protecting each other.

1) Targets of strikes are not "narcoterrorists."

2) Fentanyl not aboard these boats.

3) He doesn't understand LOAC (or at least pretends not to.)
Van Orden: "You gotta understand that average Americans do not care about these narcoterrorists at all. They care about the fact that their brothers & sisters and mothers and husbands have died of fentanyl overdoses. That's what we really truly care about. We care about our fellow American citizens"

It’s becoming the new popular dog whistle. Very common usage now to imply that Jews are behind the economic problems of the world and the suffering people are going through due to inequality.

This is ridiculous. It was the first TRUMP admin which developed the cases against President Hernandez. His brother Tony Hernandez was indicted in 2018 and convicted in 2019, and key ally Geovanny Fuentes Ramirez was indicted in 2020.

Both were later sentenced to life in prison!
Leavitt: "The people of Honduras have highlighted to him how the former President Hernandez was set up. This was a clear Biden over prosecution."

Leavitt: “The president has made it quite clear that if narco terrorists are trafficking illegal drugs toward the United States he has the authority to kill them”

[narrator voice]: He did not, in fact, have lawful authority to kill them…
Q: Was the initial order from Hegseth to kill everyone and did that come from President Trump?

LEAVITT: I would reject that Hegseth ever said that. However, the president has made it quite clear that if narcoterrorists are trafficking illegal drugs toward the US he has the authority to kill them

One of these responses seems to me to have a greater likelihood of reaching people who don’t necessarily agree with this person ideologically, and directly refutes the core aspects of the student’s claim. The other is a way of preaching to the choir and getting anyone else to tune you out.
