True! Such an incongruous slap about of emotions tho - it did make me chuckle 😁

I just figured out a way to introduce something so dark and bleak into my graphic novel.

Why then, is my first emotion glee??

Being a comic fan in the 90s was the pits. There were mostly only superhero comics and even those were dire. Today I’m so spoilt for choice, it’s bloody heaven.

This is a true golden age of comics. When I grew up all I could get were superhero comics written mostly by white men. Today the different genres, the different voices and the incredible art and breadth of storytelling just blows me away. 🙌

Written 55 years ago, Schulz's heartfelt clarity cuts through the noise, even today.

Scan of a typed letter from 1970, from Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, addressed to "Joel Lipton, 622 N. Foothill Road, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90210"

It reads:

"Dear Joel:

I think it is more difficult these days to define what makes a good citizen than it has ever been before. Certainly all any of us can do is follow our own conscience and retain faith in our democracy. Sometimes it is the very people who cry out the loudest in favor of getting back to what they call "American Virtues" who lack this faith in our country.

I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities.

Sincerely yours,

Charles M. Schulz"

I was thinking of doing the same thing 😆 … but then realised it would mean moving to the states and im not sure theyd let me in😬

Oh totally, its a useful word: but it was invented as a marketing term to give comics some legitimacy, after decades of being thought of as something “for children.”

I think the point is, that graphic novels are still just comics, and theres nothing actually intrinsically new about graphic novels 🤗

Ah, the sacrifices and moral quagmire of quality parenting! My heart goes out to you 🤣

Met her once - was supposed to taking photographs of her meeting my clients. But couldn’t help myself - gave one of my clients the camera, and said get one of me and Jane! 🤣

Um. “Comics.” Comics was the name for the medium.

Why does this get my goat so much 🤣

Yeah, their new brushes are probably partly what kicked this off for me 😅. I haven’t found anything I really like in their new lot so it’s a good excuse to have an experiment broader afield. I even had a play with some real life pencils. Madness, I know.

Thanks dude! Really interesting process trying to find a new look that I still feel happy with tho. Suspect it will take me a while to settle into tbh

I'm finding it tricky to find a brush that suits me. If anyone has any pencil and stipple brushes they can recommend for procreate, I'd love to hear!

My mini comics tend to be very densely drawn and take many hours per panel. So as I block out my graphic novel, l'm aware I'll need to come up with a simpler approach if I ever hope to get this book done! 😅

Here's a couple of examples of this paired down look l've just finished.

Omg. Just spend the last couple of hours drawing an alien spaceship, based on flower and bone shapes I liked, only to realise I’ve created the monster from Nope. Goddammit! 🤣
Mengzhou spacecraft approaches an alien spaceship, that looks like a flower.

Just arrived in the mail - the comic adaptation of one of the most gruelling true stories Ive ever read! Im only a few pages in and already hooked. By @worstjourney.bsky.social

Thank you!! That means a lot. Sometimes I wonder why the hell I do this, but hearing that does make a difference 😅

Started drawing Bad Space's first Chinese space mission, circa 2035. And because I am a nerd, I gotta make sure the crew's space suits are bang on.
The ref photos are their planned moon suits, which debuted just last year!
