Twice failed Academic here for exactly this reason. Add a bunch of all-or-nothing thinking, a pound of perfectionism & a whole lot of obsessive rumination, baby you got a stew going.
Being neurodivergent and highly sensitive is disabling in academia in many ways, but I don't see people often talk about the way you can be hit with sudden descriptions of sexual violence, death, child abuse etc in scholarship & while some people just glaze over it, for others it haunts us for days

"And remember this: the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear."
The moral of Covid and the moral of Trump II are the same: national governments wield astonishing powers, and can implement massive changes rapidly and basically unstoppably.

The status quo is maintained at *massive* cost and effort, it's not just 'the way things have to be'.

If crime is way down, why are Canadians so afraid of crime? And what are politicians funnelling money into? My latest -- they are boosting policing to police us ... not keep us safe (unless you're rich, which trust me, you are not.)

I wrote this back in March. Seven months ago. It is only more deeply true now. As it will be tomorrow. Canada isn't moving urgently enough to adjust to this new reality.

Showing up to protests against the police state dressed up as frogs or in hot dog costumes is a great tactic. Because fascists can’t use the photos as proof that their opponents are dangerous. The imagery reaffirms the police state is also playing dress-up. And being laughed at is their worst fear

Wow. Just wow.
